Tommy Stinson on Chinese, GNR and Axl
Amir replied to Dean's topic in GUNS N' ROSES - DISCUSSION & NEWS
Been going through past setlists recently and they really were playing a lot of ChiDem stuff on the '09-'10 tour and even '11-'12. The setlist was mostly ChiDem in the Asia/Canada parts of '09-'10, and even by the time they hit Europe they were playing at least 7 ChiDem songs a night (with about an equal number of Appetite songs, and just a couple of UYI tracks). By '11-'12 it was about 5-6 ChiDem songs, but that's still a decent number. What did surprise is just how Appetite-heavy the '01-'02 setlists were, I can see why Buckethead got frustrated and left: 10 AFD tracks a night vs. 3-4 ChiDem tracks. I guess it makes sense in the way that these are songs that weren't even officially released at the time, but it still must have felt bad for the guys in nuGuns Mk I. But yeah, I agree, I feel like WTTJ, SCOM, NR, PC and even KOHD are really the five they have to play every night, and if more new music had released, they could then fill the setlist with 10-12 new songs and ~3 AFD/UYI deep cuts on rotation. -
Went to Billy Joel after hearing @downzy singing his praises and he did not disappoint, a really fun performer. Was my fifth and sixth time seeing Springsteen. My first show was Wembley Stadium 2013 and I was spoilt as I got my favourite of his albums, Darkness on the Edge of Town, from start to finish, along with about 20 other songs. Second was the Olympic Park gig just two weeks later where he played all of Born in the USA, and third was Rock in Rio in September that year. At my fourth show at Wembley in 2016 I got three songs I really wanted to hear: The River, American Skin, Because the Night. This year, though, it seems he doesn't mix up the setlists as much? Between the two Hyde Park shows this year I think there were just four songs different? Still great concerts, and brought @Dazey along with me to the second to experience his first ever Springsteen gig

There are some vocal parts on ChiDem the album that were likely added between '06-'08 for songs that were recorded years before: - the high-pitched vocals during the verses on the title track - the additional lyrics on the outro SoD ("that's one more failure...") - the super low voice on TWAT ("wrong time...") What's weird with SoD is that recently he's gone back to singing the outro without the additional lyrics, like he did back in the days of The Blues.

That's still somewhat ambiguous to me, could just be referring to ABSURD where we know the drums are definitely by Brain. Not sure why they would make a point of explicitly saying drums were by Brain for the release of ABSURD, but not Hard Skool? The drums were definitely there by the time Slash and Duff came in, though: https://www.a-4-d.com/t4135-hard-skool

Holding out hope for a 2039 Chinese Democracy boxset with all the Finck/Bucket versions of Soul Monster, The General, Seven, etc. (1 year after the 30th anniversary since both the AFD and UYI boxsets missed the 30th anniversaries by one year as well). -
I rewatched TIL and Nightrain from this show on YouTube, both were fucking killer

Ah well IRS was on the setlist for L'ARC but we got YCBM instead. Is that the only time YCBM was ever played acoustically? Man, an acoustic IRS would have been a trip to hear. EDIT: Looks like YCBM was also played at the Hiro Ballroom acoustic show in 2012... along with Civil War???!! Can't seem to find any recordings on YouTube again

Oh yeah, forgot to mention I picked up my Paris tee on Monday, love it, even my family dig the design Weird thing is it (size M) fits me the same as my Bucharest tee (size S). Are the ones sold at gigs usually larger? I barely fit in any of my other size S tees these days, was surprised how well the Bucharest one fit.

That white tour tee looks cool, if they'd had it in Europe I would've bought it (wish more rock/metal bands did white tees, no one wants to walk around in the sun in black 🥵 ). I made some purchases on Rockabilia and eBay (Old Glory Merch) I remember posting about the Sorry Rifle tee here a few years back and passing on it after finding out the logo and print is smaller than pictured, but at this price I figured why not. Looking forward to the hoodie the most, had not seen that before, picked up the last M one they had but they have still L, XL etc. I love all of Anton Kandinsky's artwork for ChiDem. Tons of ChiDem era stuff on sale (can get the 2011 Chinese worker tee for $20, or $12 if you go for S size), even have '01/'02 stuff.

I wonder how much of the decision to release this as a single versus Atlas Shrugged had to do with the lukewarm reception to the leaked demo of the latter and the positive reception the Perhaps demo received 🤔 I was almost certain Atlas would be the next single but it seems like one of those songs Axl will tinker on forever.

What songs do you wanna hear?

Perhaps Think About You (if they're playing Anything Goes then I think this has a decent chance of being played in future) Dead Horse Catcher (not seen it with Slash) AFD version of You're Crazy Unrealistic: Scraped If the World Dust N' Bones w/ Izzy The General Soul Monster Atlas Shrugged Don't Cry (Alt. Lyrics) Breakdown Oh My God Eye On You I'm not the biggest UYI I fan so I'm not fussed about Perfect Crime, The Garden, Garden of Eden, etc., been years since I listened to any of those tracks. It's a bit weird that they played So Fine just once in 2020 and haven't played it since, but I Wanna Be Your Dog and TV Eye were fun Duff solo spots.
