SLASH: 'The Only People That Obsess About GUNS N' ROSES Is Media'

Recommended Posts

Former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash says that he rarely looks back on his past achievements and insists that he prefers to "keep pushing forward" while living "in the moment."

Slash, who continues to get asked about his former band despite the fact that he hasn't spoken to GN'R lead singer Axl Rose since his 1996 departure, doesn't blame the fans for their continued interest in the classic GUNS N' ROSES lineup, telling the Ottawa Citizen, "Really, the only people that obsess about GUNS N' ROSES is media. I think it's just lack of imagination."

He continues: "I'm an in-the-moment person. I don't look too far in the future and I definitely don't draw on past stuff. Whatever it is that you're doing right this second, just do that and do the best you can at it. And just keep pushing forward, always forward."

Slash will release his third solo album, "World On Fire", on September 15 via Slash's own label Dik Hayd International distributed through Roadrunner Records (Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America). Joining him in the studio once again were Todd Kerns on bass, Brent Fitz on drums and ALTER BRIDGE singer Myles Kennedy.

Slash describes his current tour to the Ottawa Citizen as "definitely better" for him than some of the wild days of the past.

"I have a lot less distractions — a lot less, at least, unnecessary distractions — in the situation that I'm in now," he says.

"What I intended to do from the get-go was never really that complicated," he adds. "But success and money and all that kind of stuff, it just makes life complicated."

Slash was also full of praise for Kennedy, saying, "Myles is great. I don't think I've ever met a singer who works as hard as he does."

The guitarist, who has amassed album sales of over 100 million copies and landed in the No. 2 spot, behind Jimi Hendrix, on Time magazine's "The Ten Best Electric Guitar Players of All-Time" list, says that despite all the accolades and commercial success he "was never aspiring to be a rock star. I never fantasized about it when I was a kid. I didn't play air guitar. I always loved that moment where the equipment was on the stage and before the band came on, and, you know, looking at the guitars … that was always really exciting to me."

I wonder if he feels the same towards NuGnR.

on topic: Cool interview, Slash sounds like he's in a good mood lately.

I was thinking more along the lines that people would say he only mentioned GN'R for attention.

I'm not saying that, but it's what I expect as a reaction.

That's the only setlist this year containing 1/4-1/3 GnR. He's been staying heavy on the old tracks while opening for Aerosmith.

If he doesn't need to "draw on past stuff" he can let them go and stick with his new material.

What about him playing Velvet Revolver songs? Are you ok with that? Or Snakepit songs? In your opinion he should only play songs grom Slash, AL and World on Fire?

He isn't complaining about Snakepit or Revolver, but the only track he's bothered playing from either of those projects lately is Slither. If he's got such a problem with his old band, I don't see why he still wants to play their songs.

I won't even bother replying to this.

I suppose it's easy to say he's moved on and lives in the moment, which is probably true to an extent, but in reality he is still tied up in GnR stuff, at the very least he has a third share over decisions about older material and merchandise I believe.

It's a bit like having an ex wife or husband, if you had kids together you can never fully escape them or their family.

He might say that to sound cool, but when around half the songs in his setlists are GnR covers, it speaks otherwise.

He wrote these songs...

So did Axl and yet he gets shit for playing them.

You really can't tell the difference between Slash playing 5 GNR songs max and Axl playing almost AFD in its entirety (besides playing less and less CD material and not debuting any new song) on every single show?

My point was that why does it matter if any of them play GN'R songs and how many? They wrote them, they can play them all they want.

Way to compare apples to oranges. Your comment has zero to do with what he actually says.

And are you friends with Slash? You know what he says to try and "sound cool" as opposed to what he says that are his true feelings?

What's funny is that Slash is basically agreeing with what a portion of people on here always complain about. Whenever a music writer mentions the old band in an article about the new band or a show, some people on here freak out about it and bash the reviewer for bring up the old guys. But Slash says the exact same thing............and he is just trying to "sound cool."

LOL, so even when Slash agrees with the Slash haters on here, they still have to bash him for it! Hilarious.

It's very important for some people to feed the Axl-vs-Slash thing. Even almost 20 years after they parted ways.

I've seen interviews with Axl where the interviewer said he was told to NOT bring up anything about Slash.

I'm sure both Axl and Slash would love to ONLY talk about their current projects and not have to continually talk about a band that hasn't existed for almost 20 years.

Neither musician has ever said they didn't want to be associated with those songs any more. People need to stop twisting that nonsense around. Both these guys helped produce some of the greatest rock music of all time. If they want to play those songs live, and people want to pay to come see them - what's the problem? Are the people bashing Slash also crying about Adler playing old GnR songs?

********

It's just music. For people to enjoy.

Stop interjecting yourself into a feud between two people that you aren't involved in. It's just silly.

Exactly.

It is JUST music.

Some people act like Axl or Slash has personally inflicted damage into their lives.

The more music that is out there the better.

Nobody is forcing you to go see Axl play live, to go see Slash live, or to go see Adler live.

GnR plays a ton of covers (other people's music). But people are complaining because Slash plays songs that HE personally helped write? Seriously?

It is just rock n roll people.

Go see who you like. Don't go see who you don't like.
