Indonesia and China are very worried about letters of hick Axl :smiley-confused2:

 But this is the precise point of the impasse. I dont think he believes he's scaring any Nations or leading the resistance. Just that he is engaged in his own way and its not limited to tweets.

Guns N' Roses are not the only international act that gets to play around here. Tons of other artists and bands come to offer their shows and they get equal "pogo-ing" and singing along.
Also, the regional and local scene is pretty vast and keeps growing

A quick search into Spotify statistics of some LATAM countries show the Top 10 is dominated by the Spanish language, Hispanic artists and the main genres are hip hop, trap and regguetón.
Zero rock, almost no English songs and no Axl Rose

Times they are a-Changin', new generations more connected with their roots and language.

First off: I would have believed you with out all the links! I don't fuck with streaming, though.

I must have said something out of line. I didn't mean anything to be mean spirited or even a minor criticism. I didn't intend to perpetuate Northern dominance over the Global South. I just thought Axl was huge there?

Why is "pogo-ing" in quotations? Isn't that the word?

From what Ive heard Argie rock is much more a living form than a lot of NA shit. Hope that you're cultural production wont be set off course by Bolsonaros and Trumps pursuit of their visions for the Americas!!

It Will Fall!

What a nice hobby....

Well, I like backing up my sayings with verifiable data if it's available, so I thought I'd share it with you (and anyone who cares).

Obviously, this is just a sample and its non-conclusive of the overall situation. I chose  Spotify because I think it is representative of the demographic that leads the trends of cultural consumption, being music one of them.

Analog radio is still big, at least in Latin America, but the people who consume music through this type of radio are not the young ones. Or not the majority of them.

 You didn't say anything bad.... I just thought that your perception of Axl being a god here was a tad too much.

He is indeed a rock icon like everywhere else and many people, musicians included, still look up to him. But I dont think his Latin America audience thinks of him as a political activist or celebrity who fights for the rights of the oppressed. No one here expects that Axl Rose would get involved with the local politics.... because he's never done something like that before.

It is expected of other artists, though, like Bono or Roger Waters. They both have got personally involved with Argentina politics, for example. When visiting the country to play their shows, they have also met with the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, with some social organizations and with the President. And I know that they have done the same in other countries of the region.

Yes, it is, we still have great local rock bands and we produce the best rock music of the region :devilshades: but it is undeniable that rock is also on a global low demand tendency, so as you can see in those Spotify charts that I posted, rock does not appear in the Top 10 or even the Top 20.

Nowadays the new generations listen to hip hop, trap and regueton. Their idols of today are also young guys and girls who sing this kind of music and most of them are products of the Internet: kids who open their YouTube channels, upload their videos of songs and soon enough it becomes viral, everybody else discover them via YouTube or Spotify and now also through Instagram.

Nah, in that aspect, the cultural production was never canceled because of guys like Bolsonaro or Trump. Even though during the dictatorship years in Argentina, all rock music was forbidden, that was also the fuel for the artists to create more songs and rise up. At the moment, music in Spanish is growing all over the world, especially after the success of 'Despacito', lots of people want to listen to more of that.

Brazil is like an island when it comes to music in Latin America, because of the language, their music is not heard that much in the rest of the countries. Now and then, one of their artists or bands will become big and cross the borders, but as you can see their Spotify charts are dominated by their own local artists singing in Portuguese.

I feel like a broken record because I keep saying that yes, some artists are activists but Axl isn't. And I say that I don't believe Axl sees himself that way. I dont think anyone sees him that way. Although I think he'd make great contributions if he went that route. Why do you want Bono and Waters "snooping around other Nations business" if you criticize Axl for engaging foreign Nations? Makes no sense to me. What is the point of large scale activism if only activists are allowed to engage - the entire point of activism is to make every single person an engaged ally. This is where Axl comes in. Thats where 90% of the worlds population comes in.

It would be just as easy to assert that "killuridols just posts about issues on mygnr." We wouldn't know if it was true or not though. :P

For me if peeps are on side, theres no need to sweep the knee. Saying someones issue-aligned good deeds arent desired doesnt make any sense to me. I mean 'anti-social social movements' cant be a thing, right? Lets leave that ever splintering progressive model to the dust bins of history. I embrace a diversity of tactics. I promote fighting from where one lives and works, from the context of their life. With out the goal of engaging the masses activism is useless and vain - without teeth.

I understand that the language causes a cultural separation. But the economic restructuring that is about to commence in Brazil will hope to spread its influence (and NA special forces would be happy to continue to help, sadly). Goodbye rainforest and hello temporary foreign workers from Argentina to work all the new farm land. And with trade it most definitely will impact other Nations. Just like Trump forced a renegotiation of North American Free Trade Agreement (even though new deal is by and large a new name with a handful of changes). So this is what I meant about having two strong men seeking to restructure LATAM economy potentially having an impact on your cultural production.

Not to mention there will inevitably be morons in your Country who feel emboldened by that scoundrel, just like dick-socks in Canada pretend to be MAGAs, who will begin advocating for a liberalized cultural content program. It's what capital insists on.

Hopefully not.

Then why did you think that Axl is considered a God here? In what sense did you mean?

My interpretation is that you'd thought his alleged god-like status makes his political opinion utter relevant to the Latin American audiences.

Where did I say I want those guys snooping around our stuff? I merely described what they do, not what I want. I have never attended an U2 or Roger Waters show, in spite of the many times they've come here to play.

I checked up what they did and I thought it was respectful. I would never tolerate that they'd come to give us instructions on how to live our lives or how to solve our shit. That's what the USA and other big powers tend to do. And that's why I don't like Axl's letters.

Why does he have to tell shit to the President of Indonesia when his own country has the death penalty in many states? Why didn't he ever send a letter to his own President to stop the killing of a fellow citizen?

I have never said any of that.... Axl can do whatever he wants with his Twitter, letters, etc. and I can have the right to align with his views and tactics or not.

I am a feminist but I dont agree with some of the methods used by some feminists groups, like burning down churches or mobbing people in public transportation.

We dont have to support every type of activism out there just because it adds up to the cause. Some of those methods do not add up, they actually do all the contrary.

Axl's shit seems to be harmless but it is not my thing either. I find it superficial, shallow and boring. Some social issues are very serious to be fooling around just because I am a bored millionaire rockstar..... But of course, it is just my opinion.

Ok. The restructure you talk about is already happening in LATAM since some years before the arrival of Trump, as the Right has been taking over the government of a good number of nations. The ones who are still resisting are Bolivia and Venezuela.

Trump plans to remove the Chinese presence in LATAM so that he can put his country's companies at the head of investments regarding public infrastructure, energy and communications. To talk about that and other business, he is coming to participate of the G-20 meeting, taking place in Argentina by the end of this month.

Okay, so Axl should be more like Roger "How could you go?  / When you know how I need you / To beat to a pulp on a Saturday night" Waters. A man on his fourth marriage who once dedicated a verse to condemning Mary Whitehouse, an anti-porn campaigner. Such a misogynist that he comes complete with a song about despising his mother.

And a Bolsonaro-Trump alliance will mean nothing new for LATAM.

Got it.

The funniest part about this is reading all of the butthurt tweets from Trump fans, nonsensical stuff to the effect of 'you don't support Trump, so I can't listen to your music anymore'.

And one of my favourites was one that said "Guess that is why your music sucks lately."

... errr... what music?

Glad Axl (or someone in the camp) changed their mind and addressed this head on.

Probably the best written statement I've ever seen from Axl to be honest.

I do not believe for a second that Axl was the one that wrote that...

Duff probably did write his own tweets though, being Punk as Fuck and all.

What part of "I was just describing what they did" you didn't understand? Where the F did I ever say I am a fan of Waters, believe Waters, support Waters, consume Waters music or whatever? Be happy that I have no clue about him nor could I name a song he's written, aside from the classic Pink Floyd ones.

So Waters is a misogynist? Thanks for informing me. Now I inform you that this doesn't make Axl less misogynist, violent, supporter of criminals and oh yeah, he used to hate his own mother as well.

As for your Melissa pic, shove it. Such a childish response, huh....

But now that Axl has tweeted and kind of "replied" to what the OP was wondering about, I think this discussion is over.

Have a good Sunday.

While I respect your wishes to end our conversation, Id also like to put my own frame on my actions.

I didnt understand my post would be so upsetting. In hindsight I was a little grumpy having been woken up at 3am, just before I posted. But the mel pic was supposed to be more light hearted then how its clearly been received (I'm not sure I understand the way its been received).

You just lost me at the suggestion that Axls tweets could be detrimental to social movements - thats really jumping the shark, imo. And like here with Waters you are taking things out of context and making suggestions that they are in reference to things that they werent in reference too. You did say Waters was 'real' in his activism and by contrast Axl should shut up. So I point out that he's very similar to Axl regarding women. :shrugs:

It was received as a mockery.

But I can grant you that you don't know these things about me: 1) I'm not much of a fan of Melissa 2) I hate that heart symbol 3) whenever I see people making that heart symbol, I cringe and immediately dislike them.

Yes, I am a neurotic.

Where did I say that?

I said I thought his shit is harmless!!! And I also said I don't like it because I consider it superficial, shallow and boring. Please go back and read again. I also made clear this is just my opinion.

Waters is an activist as well as Bono. This is a fact, whether you agree or not with their activism, this is real. Axl is not an activist for political stuff, as far as I know. I think he is an activist for animal causes, but I don't have accurate information on that either. You said yourself that you know Axl is not one, that he's engaged in his own way but that we all know that he is not a real activist..... so where's the contradiction or confusion?

I have not said that Axl should shut up. I said he can do whatever he wants with his tweets, letters, etc. but that I (we) also have the right to: dislike his engagement, not take it seriously, criticize it, be skeptical of it, etc etc. etc. Just the same way you seem to dislike Waters activism.

Them being mysoginists is a different layer of the discussion.

I don't understand this part, though...

How will people/fans know which songs are anti-Trump?

I don't see anything anti-Trump in SCOM or November Rain.... and why would Republican fans or Trump supporters should not listen to whatever music they want to?

How much of a burden it is to be checking up if the artist you like align with your political views or not?

That part of his statement sounds very authoritarian to me. Nothing democratic or even liberal.

It was meant like "Im pissed off but I still love ya" in a joking way. I didnt know any of those facts about you. I thought it would be amusing and I dont know... my post was stupid and regrettable... was supposed to soften the edges I guess.

Id like to apologies to you. Im sorry for being a jerk. I didnt understand the extent to which I was being a jerk. This is no win situation for me because its either Im cruel or Im too dub to know I was being cruel. Id have to plead the latter. Its not the first time I misjudge myself, as a few people here could attest too, but hopefully it will be the last.

Id also like to apologize to everyone here who had to read my post and for the unpleasant distraction its caused.
