AC/DC are a terrible band.

Shit thread.

AC/DC acknowledge that all their albums follow the same, simple formula. They stay true to it intentionally - it's who they are, who they always have been and who they always will be.

It's not music you're supposed to think about, it's just simple, brash, fun, rock n' roll and nobody does that better than AC/DC. Go get drunk, throw on Highway To Hell and rock the fuck out.

The years with Brian have definitely seen a decline in the quality of their output, but the Bon Scott-era is awesome. I don't listen to them the way I used to, but they always hold a special place in my heart - they were the stepping stone to so many other bands for me.

That's where I'm at with them too. I love them and always will, even if I don't still listen to them every day. They were my first favorite band, so they'll always be special for me.

I've listened to Back In Black album several times and I know Thunderstruck and Whole Lotta Rosie... and I gotta say, I just don't get the appeal.

Their songs are cheese fests, Brian Johnson is a terrible singer and they're the living embodiment of the term "dad rock".

They've got their diehard cult fans nowadays (many of them probably "dad rock" types) for sure, but they're one of the best straight-up rock n' roll bands ever. In their prime they were unstoppable. I was amazed recently when I tried to narrow down my iTunes playlist to the 'essentials' for different bands, and with AC/DC, i found it difficult to keep less than 20 tracks. They really kind of brought pop mentality to a hard rock playing field in a weird way. Those songs are insanely catchy.

EDIT: Like the other guys are saying, they were also one of the first 'rock bands' I really got into. I didn't grow up listening to secular music, I had kind of that cliched religious upbringing when it came to music (whereas for whatever reason I had more exposure to film), so it wasn't til I was like 13 or 14 that I really started delving into mainstream music. And AC/DC was a big influence during those formative years. I remember rocking out to TNT on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack.

That's just it though, I struggle to discern a single hook in any of their songs. They all sound the same to me. I can listen to a whole album of AC/DC and not one song will stand out from the pack.

I'm listening to Highway To Hell album right now (for the second time) and so far it ain't doing a lot to change my mind.

I didn't start this thread to piss off AC/DC fans, I genuinely get frustrated when there's a hugely popular classic rock band that I don't get. I guess I want to understand what all the fuss is about, but music either gets you or it doesn't, and I've just never felt one iota of excitement or enthusiasm listening to an AC/DC song.

I truly don't understand people not liking AC/DC with Bon. Maybe you are trying to hard and think to much. AC/DC is basicly just fun. It's very pure basic hard Rock 'n Roll, nothing more, nothing less. Not pretentious, just simple fun.

No, they are not a terrible band at all, they are actually pretty amazing. They make pure rock; guitar, bass, drums and a good rockish voice (Brian is not a bad singer at all and Bon was one of the best singers ever, for me the best). They have no pretensions of inventing anything new, new snobby sounds and all that shit, they just play rock. And they are an awesome live band., just look at this:

And come on, who can dislike this?!

They have a passion for their genre, they stick to it, they been around for decades and have been unwaivering in the aforementioned commitment, to me that deserves respect, i think they're a fantastic band, i've only really heard their Bon Scott stuff but i think it was fantastic. Loads of bands are one trick ponies, in fact, the vast majority tend to be, a lot of what passes for and gets credit for having different strings to ones bow usually amounts to a layer of periphery anyway.

I knew it would come the day when I would agree with you musically.

I used to blast AC/DC ages ago but it now sounds extremely dated to me. The Bon Scott era came out of the aussie pub rock culture of the time which was still steeped in and was a reaction to old conservative values reflected in the ways they sung about girls and stuff like that (She's Got The Jack, Squealer, Whole Lotta Rosie, Can I Sit Next To You Girl...) that you'd have to kind of relate to and get in some way. With Brian Johnson it became a safer and more cartoony and cheesy version of the same formula (Giving The Dog A Bone, Mistress For Christmas...). The band rocks it but I just don't relate to the lyrics all that much these days. Not sure they ever wrote anything remotely introspective.

e- saw them on The Razor's Edge tour and they kicked ass but have not been tempted to see them since.

I used to love AC/DC and listened to them daily. I really wore them out and don't even listen to them anymore these days. I almost can't stand to hear them at times lol.

But terrible? Not a chance.

Some bands have pretty defined limits and are not 'deep' but you laugh at it and just enjoy it for what it is. Also a good inspiration if you're learning blues-based guitar. At their best NO band matches the bad ass power and menace and awesomeness of those fucking chords coming on... the Malcolm brothers must have secrets ( a deal with the devil?) because though so many bands have tried to sound as badass, they never match it... the way the anticipation is amped up... it's amazing how they structure it for effect. The early stuff I remember (High Voltage) struck me as too campy and showbizzy (due to Bon singing in past bands) to my young mind but from Let There Be Rock to Highway To Hell they were awesome.

You don't just say "hey I think I'm gonna listen to some AC/DC now" and expect to get away with it. You need to get that rush, that energy, that adrenaline that tell you, that screams for AC/DC. Hit the gym and put on some Problem Child, Ballbreaker, Big Gun. You'll workout harder than ever, you're gonna have a blast. AC/DC music calls you at times.

Agree bran, there are some seriously underrated tracks on that album. The title track, Rising Power and Nervous Shakedown are my favourites. The "raw" production is kinda shitty though. Improved a lot with the remasters.

Aside from Back In Black, it's probably my favourite release from the 80's - I always enjoyed it a lot more than For Those About To Rock. :shrugs:

The Brian-era equivalent of Powerage.

Couldn't agree more.

Also spot on. Hey, everyone here: if it weren't for AC/DC, Powerage and HV probably wouldn't be here as mods. They started way back in the day on the AC/DCrocks board. Good times if there ever have been.

I like them. I can see that great tradition of Chuck Berry carried on through them.

That would all be null and void if they started breaking out some power ballads, so i can see the sense in stciking to what they do. Keef approves...

Is Angus Young possessed by the devil? that's another aspect to ACDC - they can conjure up an almost metallish sense of evil.

Any word on if Strap It On is coming out this year? :book:

Towelie, I recall you doing a Motley Crue suck thread only to do a complete 180 a month later. 180 is an understatement, you started a forum for them.

Sorry, I had to bring it up because it practically mirrors this thread. Your forum seems to have disappeared, who knows, perhaps it was a joke from the start.

As for AC/DC, I dig 'em, but they are a band you can tire of quickly to say the least. I prefer Brian to Bon though. Never was crazy about Bon's voice and singing all that much.

Back In Black is a great album, and Who Made Who is a great song.

Now THERE'S a throwback. I think it's one of 2013's most highly anticipated records, no?

The AC/DCrocks board? Fuck that shit, man. I was even before that, on the Elektra board before they switched record labels, only I went as DDDDCheap then, back with that guy Maniac and GuitarNaziMike and FatNerd if you were on that board, too.
