Godzilla (2014)

Recommended Posts

When you look at the classics....and by no means is this meant as any sort of disrespect...I just don't see how anyone that really valued the classic Godzillas couldn't have liked this film.

It not only played plenty of homage to the classics...it was gritty enough to stand on its own. It really is an excellent Godzilla film by any standard.

I have no idea what 4K even is.

Yeah, I hope Toho realizes they do have fans outside of Japan who want to buy high quality releases of their films. It would be nice to have a high definition King Kong vs. Godzilla in the original Japanese. We are slowly getting Showa films released on blu ray.

There really wasn't anything wrong with Godzilla. The best compliment you can give the film that it is a Godzilla film. The filmmakers clearly respected Godzilla, it is no longer the 90's when filmmakers just use the name and part of the look for marketing value. Not just for Godzilla but for Batman as well. The 1998 film was just another monster movie, often compared to The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. Now after Chris Nolan's Batman Begins, there is a demand for serious tone. Not just realistic, I mean how realistic can you get? It is a monster, hundreds of millions years alone that breaths radioactive fire. But actual respect for the canon.

Godzilla can become the next franchise born out of a Nolan inspired reboot, like James Bond was for Casino Royale. Hopefully this time Toho will want to make more. But this film has to make enough money in Japan first and it is worrysome because it won't be released until July. The entire country would have watched it on their laptops by then.

Thank you.

I almost got "teary-eyed" for a second.

Well said.

Yeah that top boxset is only $20 and way better than the one I have/going for $75. Hopefully these all come out on Blu-Ray thanks to the success of the new one.

I have no idea why anyone would buy the '98 Godzilla on Blu-Ray. They've even got a Mastered from 4K version.

The 98 Godzilla review on Blu-Ray.com calls it reference grade, so I'm guessing only people that want to do the whole dick measuring contest with their systems.

Who wants to see shitty CGI and bog-standard '90s action movie cinematography in HD?!

If you want to show off your TV just get Speed Racer.

It's almost as baffling as people owning Batman & Robin on Blu-Ray. Or any format.

Don't make war with the Blu Ray thread.

Godzilla is definitely one I'd want to see in HD on home video. It's a shame it wasn't shot in IMAX, gets a bit blurry blown up on that big screen. You could really tell the difference in clarity in the IMAX between the IMAX scenes and the 35mm scenes in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises (besides the increased frame size).

Doesn't help it's mostly at night and the 3D glasses dim your view.

One of my favourite bits is when Godzilla's tail swishes through the clouds and that piano note plays against silence.

Maybe the next movie will be in IMAX.

I just wish they showed Godzilla in broad daylight. Someone mentioned that parts of this film felt like a Spielberg film. That is completly and utter bullshit and I am going to explain why. Spielberg would have been proud enough to show Godzilla in broad daylight just like he did with the very first dinosaur scene in Jurassic Park.

That. Took. Balls.

It is not Jaws when the Shark looked so fake he had to shoot it from the sharks POV. Spielberg would have shown Godzilla in all his glory.

Nah, the T-Rex was mostly shown at night in Jurassic Park. He got about as much time in the sun as Godzilla 2014 did. Even The Lost World most of the T-Rex scenes were at night (including the San Francisco rampage). Joe Johnston had T-Rex and Spinosaurus battle it out in broad daylight in JPIII and it just looked weird. Not that I'm against more daylight scenes, but I think the night scenes worked well and were done effectively in this film.

"Galli... Galli... Gallimimus!"

"...like a flock of birds..."

"they're, uh, they're flocking this way..."

What a great movie. I loved Godzilla but Jurassic Park is a fucking masterpiece. If Godzilla had Jeff Goldblum in it as Ian Malcolm (not Lost World lame Ian Malcolm), it would be the perfect movie.

You gave props to a couple of questionable ones. I'm suprised to see Son of Godzilla on your list.

Goddammit, you Yanks get them all on Amazon Instant Video (free if you have Amazon Prime), and the only one on Amazon Instant Video UK is the fucking '98 movie (with some godawful Photoshop art):

Same with iTunes :/ It's like they don't want my money.
