Doing a one disc mix of absolute staples and singles that got some radio play (and limited to 15 tracks) it would be...

1. Reckless Life (not a single I admit, but a great declaration to Guns N' Roses)

2. Welcome to the Jungle

3. Sweet Child O' Mine

4. Paradise City

5. Patience

6. It's So Easy

7. Nightrain

8. You Could Be Mine

9. Live and Let Die

10. November Rain

11. Knockin' On Heaven's Door

12. Don't Cry

13. Since I Don't Have You

14. Better

15. Street of Dreams

It was hard leaving "Estranged" off of the list, but I feel that works better as a "deep cut" in the context of Use your Illusion II. The only "epic" I think is necessary for a compilation would be "November Rain." As for Chinese Democracy, I thought about the title track, but I kept it at "Better" since that seems to be the one that bridges the gap between old and new and "Street of Dreams" so there was a ballad.

If you were to throw in the full, two disc, "best of" special treatment I'd throw in

"Used to Love Her"

"Rocket Queen"

"Dead Horse"

"Yesterdays"

"Locomotive"

"Hair of the Dog"

"Chinese Democracy"

"If the World"

"Coma"

Hmmmm!?

Jungle

Nightrain

You could be mine

November rain

SOD

Sweet child

Rocket queen

Estranged

Dust N' Bones

Pretty tied up

Civil war

Live and let die

Knocking on heavens door (hey!, hey!, yeahah!!)

Paradise city

Better

The struggle is fitting in CD songs, I love songs like Shacklers and Chinese (not that better does, SOD could have been an old Guns song from Illusion II) but they just don't fit in with the rest of the catalogue, maybe when there's more music released making a best of it will be easier to combine the eras (unlikely in every way imaginable;)

1. Welcome To The Jungle

2. Nightrain

3. Sweet Child

4. Paradise City

5. Reckless Life

6. Patience

7. Civil War

8. November Rain

9. Dust N Bones or 14 Years (one of those bluesy Izzy songs)

10. Breakdown

11. Estranged

12. Knockin On Heaven's Door (to show how they can transform someone else's song into their own)

13. You Could Be Mine

14. Bad Obsession

15. Locomotive or Coma (either one of the long epics that truly highlight an Axl and Slash collaboration)

These are unequivocally the best Guns N Roses songs. Everything else is personal opinion. They represent all aspects of the band and show each part that made them great and legendary. A disc of my favorites would look much different.

Edit: it is also possible for Rocket Queen to sneak in there somewhere. Possibly in the epic slot? It does show their ability to have two completely different songs mesh perfectly into an amazing closer.

GH was the Greatest Hits, the singles not the Best of?

Best of

1. Welcome to the Jungle

2. It's So Easy

3. Nightrain

4. Mr Brownstone

5. Paradise City

6. Sweet Child O Mine

7. Rocket Queen

8. Civil War

9. You Could Be Mine

10. November Rain

11. Don't Cry

12. Estranged

13. Better

14. Street of Dreams

15. This I Love

The only way to balance it out is give each album 4 songs. No covers, no space. I would say Easy, Brownstone, Nightrain need to be on GNR Best of. So some butchery on the way.

I think I nailed it. There isn't really anything you really, really have to put on there. 14 years and Yesterdays aren't quite classic enough. UYI build down to 5 tracks. Then the most GNR songs from CD songs that get played live.

12. Shackler's Revenge

13. Better

14. Madagascar

15. Prostitute

not sure about 14 & 15, ya have to add some CD but I don't think they were the songs that Guns fans took to as much as some of the others "TWAT, SOD, TIS, Catcher" 2 from CD is probably enough... think of all the classic songs you have to skip over (not taking anything away from CDs songs).

it's true, I was just thinking how can 14 Years not be on the Best of...but it's kind of an Izzy Stradlin solo song.

I'm not sure with CD, from the live shows Chi dem, Better, SOD, TIL is kind of like the final verdict. Shackler's and ITW were pre-release singles. Then Chi dem, Better, SOD. I read somewhere the band wanted Shackler's Revenge as the first single. The Best Buy playlist was Chi Dem, ITW, TWAT.

Also I look at Nightrain and Brownstone, not sure if Yesterdays, Catcher, TWAT etc.

I guess I see Shackler's as like the best rocker, YCBM, Better as SCOM, Madagascar like a Civil War and Prostitute beats out Catcher and TWAT as the epic, the masterpiece.

But actually I'd go for CD, Better, SOD, TIL as those were the ones to fly live. Another edit coming. Not sure if it will make it better. In the end although Better is good, it doesn't sound like GNR. So putting in Patience which classic. So SOD sounds like GNR and so does TIL, no one will blink.

Best of GNR

1. Welcome to the Jungle

2. It's So Easy

3. Nightrain

4. Mr Brownstone

5. Paradise City
