I hope you at least stopped to eat sometimes! I dunno if the sharks would care how pretty you are, but seal eating sounds accurate . I love living on the West Coast, it's the most beautiful part of Scotland for definite, so diverse and dynamic. The sunsets here are breathtaking. I don't really know anything about Reno other than it was in Sister Act, which I haven't seen since I was about 18...

Graeme
Was that when you decided to move up the mountain that you currently live on? Do you work up there too, or do you have to go back to the city? Where I live is the kind of place where you can stand in the middle of the road for 5 minutes and not worry about getting hit by anything, or leave your bike on the front lawn overnight by accident and find that it's still there the following day. The cool thing is that Glasgow City Centre's only 25 minutes away on the train though, with its profusion of bars, clubs, shops, cinemas, theatres, live music venues, museums, parks and more (I feel like I should work for the Scottish Tourist Board) so I get the best of both the urban and rural worlds. Whenever I'm bored of one, I just dip into the other.
AxlsFavoriteRose
it was a part of it. i moved to Reno from Sacramento and at the time that was the only part of Reno i could afford. but my dad passed away a few years back and allowed me to move. i just moved from the north part of Reno to the south, but it's not really in the city limits. once you turn off state route 341 the roads turn to bumpy unpaved roads. which is fine as i have a 4 wheel drive. it just really sucks because we have to use propane tanks out here as there are no gas lines yet. propane is quite expensive! Reno is changing a lot as more and more businesses come here, such as Tesla which is coming here soon. we have some cultural events, and we have a lot of things here in the summer like Hot August Nights where people come from all over to show off their classic old cars and participate in car shows and such. we also have hot air balloon races and Burning Man is a little more than 2 hours away. also we have tons of pub crawls for different things like a Halloween one and a Christmas one, just any excuse to have one plus it's only two hours to Sacramento and four from the ocean and San Francisco. and Lake Tahoe is, like i said before, only like 25 minutes away. you would make a great spokesman for the Scottish Tourist Board! it sounds delightful Edited December 16, 2016 by AxlsFavoriteRose
AxlsFavoriteRose
i can already tell it's going to be one of THOSE days. my dryer died, i have to see the dr. today instead of next week cos she's going on vacation for a month ( i like time to mentally prepare before i see her, ugh ) and something is going in with my nephew and i can't reach him to see if he's okay. so i am thinking a nice soak in my garden tub with a glass of white wine. or two tonight

Graeme
Got together with a bunch of old university pals, we all went out and raided the local supermarket then made an early Christmas dinner together. As you can see, I am the only one to have my priorities correct.

Good team effort to make all the food, the meal was delicious (if I do say so myself, I was in charge of the meat, the gravy and the mashed potato) then we played board/card games into the night.

BlueJean Baby
Just got some egg nog. Its pretty cold here, so I will probably just chill out tonight, maybe watch TV and drink egg nog. Thinking about spiking mine, but mom doesn't really drink so all I can find in this house is creme de menthe or Canadian Mist...definately won't be the creme de menthe...yuck

I've been to a really remote volcanic island in the Pacific before. It's called Isla Socorro, 700 miles off the west coast of Mexico, owned by the Mexican military, so you can only go there as a researcher under Naval escort. I went there with 5 students on a frigate. It was amazing, so beautiful, the stars in the middle of the ocean were phenomenal, but it was one of the loneliest experiences of my life. I was the only English speaker on the whole trip and my Spanish wasn't very good at the time. Have there ever been any instances of people falling onto that sort of thick lava. Or better still any footage?

Or better still any footage? Deaths caused by lava are relatively rare, there have only been 887 recorded deaths from lava flows, 0.32% of all known fatalities from volcanic causes. A volcano called Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has lava that moves much faster than that observed at most other volcanoes (mainly just because of differences the chemical composition), up to 60 mph. When it erupted in 1977 and 2002, large, fast-moving lava flows inundated areas of the nearby city of Goma, over 170 people were cooked over both incidents. I don't think there's any footage of anyone falling into lava, even if there was you'd have to be a hell of a sadist to keep recording, or to watch, because it'd be a horrific way to go. If you fell from a height into a lava lake then the heat would probably do most of the work of killing you before you landed, and the impact with the hard, roasting hot crust on the top of the lava lake would likely finish the job. You can see a simulated version here, where people throw a bound package of organic waste designed to represent a human into the crater of Erta Ale volcano in Ethiopia (generally if scientists want to do any experiments with a "what would happen if I threw "x" into a volcano", Erta Ale is your go-to because they have no health and safety restrictions there). A person falling from a short distance into a moving lava flow likely wouldn't last very long, but the end would be agonising, their tissue would be destroyed on a massive scale, second by second. The parts of them that are unsubmerged would ignite as the air would literally be hot enough to cook them, the water in their body would evaporate... Grim stuff.
