THE GENERAL - MONSTERS - Official Discussion Thread. NO LINKS OR ASKING FOR LINKS

It’s the same. There’s a slightly different fan-made EQ maybe.

I doubt, this in itself would become the story: “Axl tries to bribe the press”. It’s very unethical.

When the Village Sessions leaked, there weren’t any news reports about it, IIRC. In The General and Monsters case, maybe it’s a matter of people still doubting that they are real. Remember, the press is not a GNR specialist and they have to be careful with fake stuff created by AI.

Stories are killed all the time in the entertainment industry and yes some would stay quiet if what is offered in returned Is worth it...sure...is this what happened here, 99% not as it only takes one outlet to promote the leaks and you can't expect them to offer them all something juicy...

So, I hear you on Village...but some did report a little eventually and remember this clear distinction....in late 2019 no website was expecting a new GNR single...In 2023...a lot of these outlets just previewed/talked about Perhaps and promoted it with rumours pre-release, the leaked jukebox stuff and even some posted the YT links that were still the original demo + on release day pasted Guns press release and commented on the Vinyl release of Oct 27th which included "another single"....so all week they've been expecting this release (unlike in '19) and yet nothing, usually happy to be negative about any band (especially Guns) so I'd be surprised if it stays quiet forever as these outlets posted the most random of non-stories in the past, especially blabbermouth and loudwire, the like.

So with the rise in A I and tons of dubious fake news, you think they're being more careful? Would be a first, must be legal reasons, nothing else would stop them in their usual trash rumour posts....this time it's a real story, so what gives...

I am a bit befuddled by it....

Hope to god they stream this before the 8/12....or we're gonna debate this unnecessary endlessly (what's new....) 😸

Why do you feel it's unlikely that it's Slash? I wouldn't call myself an expert but I have a fairly good understanding of how Slash plays from analyzing his guitar parts to learn them and the TG outro has a lot of signature Slash licks. The shred part is something he does a lot when improvising live and also sounds quite similar to his solo in Straight to Hell by Ozzy Osbourne. And the speed isn't outside Slash's comfort zone either.

It definitely isn't Buckethead. Bucket is a lot cleaner while shredding and he plays some variation of a very recognizable Paul Gilbert-esque legato sequence almost always. I don't think it's Bumblefoot either, he has a very different playing style and tone than what we hear on the song.

You definitely sound like more of an expert on guitars than me! Hopefully we will find out definitively soon enough.

Who was registered on that website someone shared last week that confirmed the title as The General & Monsters?

It's absolutely insane that people here think that the guitars are played by anybody other than Slash or Fortus. As if Slash would ever agree to that lol.

People are either fucking stupid or just don't pay attention lol idk

Not if it's a CD era leak of the track!

Sometimes you can explain so much with one simple line or feeling...huh!?

That line can and probably does explain a lot of young adult Axl and some of his behaviour and actions which were clearly (not excused) brought on by experience trauma...as an elder man he's much different in the last decade and probably taken years of therapy and sorting out shit to get to this place, including, and god I hate to praise but the stability of his Brazilian family giving him some continuity...

He often has said....now is not the time but I'll explain my actions when the time is right to paraphrase....can't wait for that book some day...

Oh completely, when abuse happens at a young age the thing is that person is still developing so the damage is even deeper and harder to heal.  t's not just a case of 'learn to deal with your past' once you're older, those scars have shaped your very personality and when you start to make decent progress in therapy it's a mindfuck to unpick how much of your 'flawed self' are trauma responses you can heal from but nobody fucking told you before!

That line and the anguish with which it's sung really lays it all out, it's such a brave song to put out there.  I discovered GN'R as a teenager in the early 2000s, worn down by and so close to being able to leave home and escape an abusive mother (nothing quite as extreme as what Axl went through) and hearing Axl's onstage rants talking about his family and what he's overcome gave me so much hope and someone to relate and look up to even out of darkness.  This song takes me right back to those days and it's triggering and heartbreaking and cathartic all at the same time.  I hope it's healing for him to put it out there.

Exactly, that outro is Buckethead or Fortus, period

Yeah, sounds like Buckethead to me, not saying that Fortus can’t do it, but I don’t see Slash trying to replicate that sound just to re-record it, but maybe. Doesn’t seem like Slash’s style at all.

I think both these songs are demo’s.

We literally got our holy grail and we're still arguing semantics

I don't care who's playing on it. I finally have it. I loved it on the first listen but God damn has it grown on me after having a weekend to digest it. It just makes me wish Axl released more 20 years ago. This is a great song that sounds like a great modern Guns song. If he did more like this and actually struck while the iron was hot, God knows what could have been.

I know not all of it was necessarily his fault, but damn. I want more material in this vain.

If you listen to The General with headphones at 2.50 does anyone else hear errr.... frogs ribbiting?

Can't unhear it now lol. It's one of those weird CD-era sound effects. I always wondered what those chirping sounds at the beginning of TWAT were.

It's great, until December we have no real knowledge of what era this version is from. I know we have people saying "how can you not tell it's Slash" and others saying "it's Bucket" and so on. But we don't know for sure, as good as your trusty Slash tone radar may be!

We'll find out in Dec.

If it is from the CD era this will mean we'll have two versions to listen to and be able to do what we've done with Hard Skool, Perhaps etc and compare the new and old mixes. I think that's part of the joy of the CD era, having all different versions of almost every song to become our favourites.

Of course these are not demos. This is the real deal to 99-100%.

If it 100% then I can guarantee you won’t have BH on any of the songs! All his parts will be re-recorded. Would be cool to have BH and Slash on a recording tho. Find out on Dec 8 😉

Well, if Slash has played something that people think is Buckethead, he's definitely outdone himself! Gotta send posts from this thread to Slash haters after the song is officially out.

After Ive listened to the songs on headphones, aside from the ending which Im almost sure is done by Fortus, I cant understand how is anyone thinking this is the bucket guy playing.

This is Slash and not some blbuleu kverlvjublbueklu dududud “guitarrist”

Whilst I enjoy all of these ‘new’ songs to some degree (with the exception of ‘Absurd’), I think they all suffer slightly from having either short or repeated verses. I wish Axl had worked on them lyrically a little more.

One of my biggest issues with the songs for sure.
