These internet people say they totally met Guns N' Roses! collection of tales

Recommended Posts

Sometimes on the internet, you see people make claims on how they met members of GnR.

While the stories may or may not be true and might not be verifiable, the main purpose of this thread is entertainment. I guess I could say "and it shows a portrayal of Guns N' Roses not limited by what can be written in the press, and from an everyday perspective" but to be honest, there's a lot of crap on the internet, so entertainment it is.

So if you're wandering around the internet, and see someone claim that they met a GnR member, and it might provide some amusement or contain something interesting, come back and pop the story in here!

Here's some to start it off with.

I have an ex who’s a guitar player and he got hit up to apply for GnR for one of their tours in the 90’s. He basically got to final 3 and did an audition for Axl and Slash and said Axl interrupted the audition to tell him he needed to make the guitar sound like a “crunchy red apple.” Obviously baffled he tried again and again got interrupted by a more exhausted Axl saying, “no, like a crunchy RED apple.” Anyway that went on for a bit and he didn’t get it but crunchy red apple has stayed in my mind.

I met Slash at a Halloween party in Hollywood a few years back and he was wearing that hat. He also had a chick with him with giant boobs that yelled at him for talking to me instead of her then she dragged him off somewhere.

He was kind of out of it at the time. I got the feeling he didn't know where he was.

posted in 2019

Met Steven Adler in Appleton, Wi years back, probably circa 2008 or 2009 before one of his shows. He was hanging out in front of his bus and was genuinely enthused to have fans coming up to him. He took pictures with us (which were ultimately lost) and signed our tickets. Talked with him for about 10or 20 min he was very down to earth. Then we went inside the club, got front row spots and rocked out to the show. Saw him and the guitar player hanging out after the show, he remembered our names which was cool and we talked for a few more minute. Never felt rushed or anything. Ultra cool guy who made our night.

Axl at the video store

I met Slash, Duff, Gilby, and Matt a bunch of times... and Axl twice. They all used to come into my work which was Tower Video on Sunset across from Tower Records. Slash and Axl both worked at that Video store years before -- and were fired.

Anyways, both times I met Axl were late at night. The first time he almost jumped into a brawl between a customer and the Parking Attendant who didn't want to pay for parking. That scuffle solved itself, so me and Axl walked in together. I walked around behind the counter and asked him, "Is it true you used to work here?" He looked around real slowly, started to grin, did that Axl shrug and said, "Unfortunately." We both laughed.

I told him if he needed any help, just ask. So he went off in the LaserDisc section and nobody was there to bug him. He asked me things about certain LaserDisc terms that most people didn't know back then, like Aspect Ratios, WideScreen vs Letterbox, specific things about the Criterion Collection. He bought a stack of movies and was a super nice, down-to-earth guy. He shook my my hand, signed my guitar which I had at work with me that day.

Second time was after they finished filming the video for Estranged, it was filmed on the Sunset Strip in front of the Roxy, which was about a block away from Tower Video. I watched them shoot the portion of the video where Slash is flying on the fires and the dolphins are swimming in the road. They wrapped and Axl ended up coming in the store again.

Pretty much the same story, except Axl knew my name this time and I helped him shop a little bit.

After breakfast i went to get my things to leave and i was waiting at the elevator and then it came, the doors opened and behold there was DUFF! I got in and said " Oh man its DUFF MCKAGAN!" He immediately asked me " hey can you use your key to help me get to the lobby?" I said "oh you don't need a key for the lobby" and proceeded to press the lobby key for him. I told him how professional the concert was and how "it was such a great performance!" he said " yeah we worked really hard on rehearsal and especially the Video element" I said thank you for coming back to Australia because i missed them at Eastern Creek in '93 for the use your illusion tour" he goes "oh right" anyway the doors to the elevator opened at the lobby and I wished him and the band the best, shook his hand and he said " thanks man Aussie people are so nice." Not so much Guns N'Roses, but Axl Rose. Someone, I'll call this Fan Alex(An anagram of Axl at least phonetically, 😉😏) said they saw Axl singing at a bar or something like that way back in 1984 before Guns N'Roses ever formed. They said they are a Psychic and Axl was taking a smoke break and Alex decided to chat with him. Alex told Axl he was going to be a huge success in the music world soon and he would have a band that would also be huge success soon . Axl asked,"Is the name of my huge success Band going to be called,"LA Guns?" Alex said ,"You got half the band name right!" Axl and Alex chatted for a while about music before saying their Goodbyes. Alex said they knew Axl was going to be a huge success in the music world soon, but Axl far exceeded their prediction! 😀

p1: Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood may quite possibly be the nicest people on the planet, Keith Urban, Frankie Ballard (if you like great guitar playing, look him up), James Iha, Taylor Hanson, Billy Duffy of the Cult, Axl Rose (yes, really), and a bunch of others.

p2: Axl Rose - Hermosa Beach 2003 - hung with him for a few hours - totally not what I was expecting - showed me some demos for Chinese Democracy

p1: DUDE.

Did he play any songs that didn't make the final album?

p2: Yeah one called 100 Cuban Skies about cigars... weird right? Showed me about 8 demos in his Ferrari - what a strange night - told me all about Rhiad and the Bedouins and what it was about... we talked about Izzy and his work ethic, Slash, Shannon Hoon... he was by himself and two buddies and I sat at his table at a bar called Sharkeys... the reason he invited us to sit with him is because I had heard The Blues (street of dreams) on a rock in rio 2002 bootleg - I asked about it and he was impressed I knew it

p1: That's awesome, man! I know that "Cuban Skies" has been a rumored song title for YEARS, so it's pretty cool that you can say that you've heard it! Never would have imagined that it would be about cigars, though!

Axl has really mellowed out over the years - I briefly met him in 2012 and he was VERY patient, polite, and gracious when it came to signing autographs.

p2: I guess Stephanie Seymour’s sister was dating an arms dealer named Rhiad and Axl didn’t really dig this dude so he told me He wrote that tune about him. Said Bucketheads white guitar is a hollow body les Paul that was built by a master luthier who suicided right after he gave the guitar to Buckethead - told me Izzy would rather be lazy and make $40,000 then Work his ass off and make millions - said Slash quietly OD’d four times in 2002 - just a bunch of inside info that somehow I became privy to

p1: Axl actually wrote an essay about "Rhiad" in the unreleased / alternate artwork for "Chinese Democracy." It was a pretty interesting read.

It's so odd that Axl and Izzy were close then, but have evidently had a falling out over the reunion with Slash and Duff.

Not so much Guns N'Roses, but Axl Rose. 😀

19 year old with strong thoughts

I met him in 1985 right before Guns and Roses was formed. It was at the state fair in L.A. He said I was the prettiest girl he had seen all day. I turned round and looked over my shoulder to see who he was talking about.

It made him laugh and he said to the drummer…she turns around. He took a break and I spent fifteen minutes talking to him.

I told him he was going to be very famous soon. He wanted to know if it was under the name LA Guns. I said no but the name was half right. He was starting a new band and gave me three choices of names for bands. Guns and Roses was one of the names.

He said he had drawn a logo and wanted me to tell him what shape it was. I told him it was a circle. He let me hold one of his necklaces to see if I could tell anymore.

He was soft spoken, calm, and intelligent. He told me the girl he had tattooed on his arm was his girlfriend.

He told me I had to know who he was because most people who lived in LA did. When he found out I lived in AZ and had never heard him prior to the gig at the fair he got chills and goosebumps on his arms.

He asked if he would ever be internationally known. I told him he would be known around the world. He said he couldn't even imagine it but he hoped I was right. I replied, I haven't ever been wrong about something I felt very strongly about.

I was 19 at the time and I wanted to get an autograph. I didn't have a pen paper. I told him my dad would. He took one look at my 6″5 dad and bailed before I could get that autograph.

Proud that he exceeded even what I could tell him at the time.

Identical twins meet Axl

Let me preface this by saying that I have an identical twin. I met Axl Rose on the Appetite for Democracy tour in 2013. He was a really nice guy. My twin brother met him the following year on the same tour. I didn’t tell Axl that I have an identical twin and so he came right out and called my twin by my name. In response, I and my twin attended the next Guns N’ Roses show we could get to. We had backstage passes so we were able to get backstage and he remembered us. Apparently, my twin had told him how to tell us apart because Axl had no trouble telling us apart this time. We sat talking with him for the next twenty minutes. He is a really nice guy and I wouldn’t mind meeting him again.

The first half of your quote is exactly what I was thinking about! 😀 Thank you! 😀 I got a few things wrong in my recollection, such as saying Axl was performing at a bar when he was actually performing at a State Fair, saying he was taking a smoke break when it was just a break, and saying the year was 1984 when it was actually 1985(Still before Guns N'Roses ever formed, 😉.

There's a few interesting ones I've talked about in the Wilderness Years thread regarding sightings of Axl in 1998-99. One of them was about meeting him outside the gate of his house that wound up actually being true. It was posted in October 1998 but the pictures didn't come out until 2018:

Meeting Axl July 3, 1998 :

I was so nervous to ring his doorbell but i did it anyways and his housekeeper
talked to us for a little while saying that he was in the middle of working
out, and she said that since my girlfriend and I had traveled for 4 hours
looking for his house she would ask if Axl Would say hello, and sure enough he
came down the drive way, (same one in the Estranged Video)and opened the gate.
He was so nice, he had his trainer with him, and he answered any and all
questions i had on the news of GNR. I got a photo with him and he signed my Use
your illusion 2 cover. He had a bandana on, but his hair was short. He has
gained weight!!! Muscle, not fat!!! He looks good and healthy.
He said GNR hopes to have something out by this coming summer!!

Gonna post just the links of the other 2 so its not an endless post:

Ok, so you all can call this bullshit if you want, but I met Richard Fortus and he's a great dude.

I, as I usually do, said some awkward stuff because I'm a goober and he was really nice about it and made it as painless as possible.
His collection is amazing as well, and he was showing us some pics of this cool Korina flying V that was being made for him at the time that looked amazing.

In talking about guitar collections he at one point said to me that "I'm still looking for my '59" so I told him that he should hurry before Joe Bonamassa buys them all.

I won't say exactly how he responded to that, but lets just say this is definitely the "Interview version" of his opinion. He was MUCH less complementary in person lol

I was watching him record with Don't Feed the Animals and left with huge appreciation for just how good he really is. He was recording with the prototype of a signature amp he is making with Supro that was supposedly about to be released and it sounded great too. Told us all a story about how he bought the Marshall it was built on from Mick Mars.

TL : DR it's funny to see how the interview opinion and personal opinion are different as you still have to watch what you say even if you play in Guns n Roses. Also Fortus is a really cool guy and amazing to talk gear with if you're into that.

Can't speak for Axl back then, but I think he's become pretty cool recently. I live in London, and a few years ago he donated a huge sum of money to the children's cancer ward I live near, which bought them some new equipment. I'm friends with one of the nurses there, and when I asked her about it, she said he'd been making periodic donation for years, though the most recent one was the biggest. It made me really respect him tbh, and think maybe he's changed for the better. (I couldn't find any article about the most recent one, which was about 2017, but I did find an article about him visiting the ward in 2006. Inspiring stuff.)

I am 37 and I fucking look back and remember guns and roses and it brings me back to yesterdays. I met Axl Rose in Hampton VA in 1991 and he was very cool and I felt a kinda kinship to him because I grew up on the streets of LA and Phoenix AZ. I most likely knew him in the early 80s and we shared many of the same ideas of what the wold should be.

The fact that your daughter wants to dress like him? I bet if you took pics and tagged him on his socials, he would reply.

Tell Grandma she can stuff it. Daughter is 11 and can make her own choices. Not a single damn thing about that band is against Christianity.

I remember seeing in Youtube comments a long while ago about how someone's brother met Axl, and Axl complimented that dude's long hair. I can't find it now, but if I ever come across it again, I'll post it.

Izzy Stradlin time!

There's not much, but at least there's something. I'm guessing the other "I met Izzy" stories are lost somewhere on old side of the internet.

A good friend of mine once told me that Izzy definately used a MkIII on AFD. I can't remember now how he knew that (where he learned it), but he said it's for sure. I know that doesn't help you much, but just thought I'd throw it your way.

I met Izzy a few times when I was living in LA. We both rode Harleys and used to meet at Bartel's H.D. back when it was in Culver City. Never did ask him about what amp he used on AFD. Sorry!

AFD rocks, and I love my blue stripe simul MkIII!

Cheers, Johnny

I met Izzy on his tour for Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds, and he was very cool, humble and laid back. Just a cat that was grateful to be making the music he wanted to make, and glad some folks appreciated it. We actually had a little time to hang, and he was very gracious. When I met Slash a few years later, it was a different circumstance, no real hang time, but he came across well, not arrogant, just a cool rock and roll brother.

Guns and Roses with Alice Cooper at the UIC Pavillion in Chicago, 1987.  I was at this show.  I met Izzy - I had him sign the back of my jean jacket!

True story.

This one seems a bit too "high-standards" for the random-internet-stories thread since it's from Erik Turner talking on a podcast with some other dude.

Turner wasn't ready to go to Hollywood when Izzy asked

https://thechuckshutepodcast.buzzsprout.com/397282/5607451

done on 2020

Copy and pasted from the transcript:

Chuck Shute : 6:37

Yeah, that's pretty crazy. So they kind of already had a little bit of a following when you join the band, but I heard this the other day, this a crazy story. So before you joined Warrant, there was another band that you're in. I don't know where were you in the band, but you played or audition or something with Izzy Straddlin' from Guns and Roses. He was playing drums and you got together with him?

Erik Turner : 6:59

Yeah, I met some friends of mine. You know, we play in garage bands. And there's a group of musicians locally and my buddy Mike Delaney called me and he's like, Hey, man, we got a new drummer. Come over to the garage or house or bedroom wherever the hell it was. And we went over there and that's the first time I met Izzy- he was playing drums. And so then that you know, we just probably jammed a couple times... so long ago.... really blurry, but he did sell his drum set and he was looking to buy a PA my friend had a PA that he was selling so Izzy he bought it. And then we got together Izzy and I once or twice hanging out at a place called tri city park and started writing some songs. And not too long after that I got a knock on the door. It was Izzy and he says "I'm going to Hollywood Do you want to go?" And I was 16 years old at the time said no.

Chuck Shute : 7:52

Yeah,

Erik Turner : 7:53

..To Hollywood. I'm not ready to leave home.

Chuck Shute : 7:55

Do you have a copy of those songs anywhere that you wrote with him?

Erik Turner : 7:59

there was no recording or anything like that... acoustic guitars and some beers and who knows what else out by the lake.

Chuck Shute : 8:05

That's cool.

Erik Turner : 8:06

Throwing some ideas around... Yeah. And so then I see him when I moved to LA when I'm 19. And I'm at the -Troubadour comes up again- we're out front of the Troubadour, there's Izzy handing out Hollywood Rose flyers and he's wearing a pink leather jacket and you know all rocked out and stuff. So we reconnected a little bit. And then after Guns and Roses got huge... I haven't seen him since then. But I'd go see Guns and Roses play at the Roxy and the Troubadour in places like that and say hi to Izzy...

Axl lands in Salt Lake City in a balloon

(A lot of this story is in the photos posted)

poster: This was in Salt Lake City in 1991.

poster: It's really as simple and insane as it sounds. The hot air balloon had trouble or something and had to land, and it happened to land on my grandpa's street.

I've had the picture of just Axl for a while, but without the context, it's just a picture of Axl.

We found the rest of the photos cleaning out his house this week.

commenter: Did your grandpa know who he was?
poster: He had written this on the back, so he or someone in the crowd figured it out:

poster: Lupine Way by Cottonwood High.

commenter: Would love to meet Axl, he's my favorite singer ever. Were you there for this? Or were you not born yet

poster: I was alive then, but not there for this.

Axl donates to a London Ward:

Can't speak for Axl back then, but I think he's become pretty cool recently. I live in London, and a few years ago he donated a huge sum of money to the children's cancer ward I live near, which bought them some new equipment. I'm friends with one of the nurses there, and when I asked her about it, she said he'd been making periodic donation for years, though the most recent one was the biggest. It made me really respect him tbh, and think maybe he's changed for the better. (I couldn't find any article about the most recent one, which was about 2017, but I did find an article about him visiting the ward in 2006. Inspiring stuff.)

Hampton VA Axl was cool

post date unknown

I am 37 and I fucking look back and remember guns and roses and it brings me back to yesterdays. I met Axl Rose in Hampton VA in 1991 and he was very cool and I felt a kinda kinship to him because I grew up on the streets of LA and Phoenix AZ. I most likely knew him in the early 80s and we shared many of the same ideas of what the wold should be.

Axl the true bad boy of Rock

replier: Living next to 1988 Duff might be a different story, though.

poster: That’s true. He’s Dad Duff now. But still cool and looks great.

[comment that was in reply, but deleted]

poster: He’s nothing but the nicest man. Humble and very much a family man.

Slash still dresses like that

Let me tell you something. I live in Los Angeles. Slash also lives here. I've seen him come in the places I've worked and he still dresses like that. He's the friendliest, most amazing person. The fact that your daughter wants to dress like him? I bet if you took pics and tagged him on his socials, he would reply.

Tell Grandma she can stuff it. Daughter is 11 and can make her own choices. Not a single damn thing about that band is against Christianity.

...

I remember seeing in Youtube comments a long while ago about how someone's brother met Axl, and Axl complimented that dude's long hair. I can't find it now, but if I ever come across it again, I'll post it.

Loving the hot air balloon story. Those photos are so summer 91.  Also appreciating that London hospital story.

Great thread here @BucketEgg  Very compelling! Thank You for it ^_^

Boomer says she gave Axl financial advice

https://old.reddit.com/r/insanepeoplefacebook/comments/dsi7no/no_respect_for_elders_anymore/f6s2lk8/?context=999

OK, soooo, I'm a Boomer. I'm disabled. The scenario shown above, happens to me a lot. By the end of the work day, my ankles feel like I am walking through a field of upturned razor blades every time I take a step. It is very painful.
I remember when they first started giving me trouble, three years ago. I thought, "Oh, here we go, the bod's going to start giving out on me from now on, I'm officially a senior."

But then I thought, well, so what, it happens to everyone, it's a fact of life, I don't have to let constant pain cause me to become a complaining curmudgeon. I could decide that it's a challenge, and then challenge myself to smile at everyone I make eye contact with all day; an experiment to see how it might affect my overall demeanor. Maybe strike up a conversation with a compliment.

I especially enjoy the times when I see youngsters wearing Metallica, Motorhead, Guns 'n' Roses t shirts, so I can lean in and tell them that I hung out with James Hetfield and was friends with Lemmy Kilmister and Axl Rose back in our heyday.

"Yup, an old, fat broad like me," I joke when they look all amazed, and they always laugh. Then I show them pictures of how I looked back then, and they are blown away.

I sometimes tell the story about the time I was at the Gardner Street Studio hanging out with Axl in their dirty, ratty one room rehearsal space. The floor was literally covered with junk food garbage that was piled up to my knees in some places. I went to use the bathroom, but Axl wouldn't let me, he said it was way too filthy. He looked around the room and grabbed a Pioneer Chicken box and held it out to me.

"Here, use this if you have to take a shit. I use them all the time. They work great!"

He was so earnest, deferential and chivalrous about protecting my ladylike demeanor amidst the squalor, I found it endearing and charming and couldn't help smiling.

"No, that's ok, I'll just walk to the Denny's down the street, but thank you for thinking of me."

"I'm coming with you, it's too dangerous for you to walk down there alone by yourself."

And he did.

On the way down, he asked me what would happen when the comet Shoemaker-Levy plowed into Jupiter. He said that he'd asked everyone who'd crossed his path in the past few days, but no one had an answer for him.

"I knew they wouldn't, but I asked them anyway, because I knew you'd be able to tell me the next time I saw you, and I just wanted to compare how smart you are with how dumb they are. I get really bored a lot, because I have no one to talk to around here, all the chicks are as dumb as a box of rocks and it pisses me off and I start talking shit to people and picking fights with them, which is not good for me at all. I have to stay focused because three different record companies want to sign us, and I want to get us the best deal possible."

I was taking a class called Music Business Management at L.A. City College at the time, so I gave him this advice:

"Start your own publishing company, and publish all of your own songs. It only costs about a hundred dollars to setb up your own company, you know. Contact the Songwriter's Guild, they'll help you do it, and help you publish the songs, too. Publishing is where the real money is in the music industry. You should have at least three albums worth of songs in your portfolio when you go to negotiate with the A&R reps. They'll try to sign you to a crapass $20,000.00 production deal, but don't accept that. Counter-offer with a deal in which you'll ask for a $100,000.00 advance at most, because you have to pay that advance back in the future. Negotiate for a percentage point from every unit sale, starting with 2%; they will laugh and offer you a quarter point, and keep counteroffering a lower percentage until you meet in the middle. It might not seem like a lot, but trust me, it will add up. Plus, just the act of asking for a percentage point of individual unit sales shows them that you're a professional and they'll respect you. Then knock their socks off by requesting to have a clause inserted that says you can re-negotiate that percentage higher if sales top 100,000, then higher when sales reach 250,000 units, and so on. Because you know they will, you guys are going to be hugely famous, and you need to operate from that standpoint."

He followed that advice to the letter, and the rest is history.

I saw him at a club in Hollywood a few weeks later; girls were kneeling three deep beside his table and two bodyguards kept their pissed off boyfriends at bay. Axl saw me, and jumped up, waving me over.

"I did everything you told me to do, and it worked! We're going to be rich and famous, and I owe it all to you!"

He wanted me to sit at his table, but the girls were shoulder to shoulder there on the floor and would not let me through.

Axl reached out his hand over their heads, stretching his arm out as far as he could and took my hand.

"You're the smartest girl I've ever met, the girl who always dresses so cool. I'll never forget you."

I haven't seen him since then, that was 32 years ago. I have music industry friends who will hook me up with him again, maybe soon.

So, what's the point of rambling on about my past? I'm just an old, fat, disabled Boomer broad, but I've had a pretty interesting life. I guess you could say that the pain is the price I am paying for that life in a way. I would really be grateful if a youngster got up and offered me their seat. My feet and ankles hurt a lot. I don't glare and make snide remarks if I don't get a seat on the train. But I will be paying for standing up the entire commute; I literally will not be able to walk by the time I get home. I'll have to crawl on my hands and knees to the bathroom, the kitchen, etc. I imagine a lot of Boomers my age are feeling similar or worse pain, and maybe that's why they get so huffy and puffy. It was disappointing to see comments like "Boomers are a mental illness" and "Boomers will be okay." Well, now, maybe not so much. A little compassion wouldn't kill you. We're not all entitled whiners like a lot of you millennials and Gen-Xers claim.

I don't feel more or less entitled than anyone else, to a seat on the two buses and the subway I ride during my 1.5 hour commute, I just want to get off my feet. I've walked on them for a long time.

Axl's house had windows painted black

https://old.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/1m3oob/did_you_ever_grow_up_with_someone_that_is_now/cc5ms46/?context=999

My mom went to high school with Axl Rose (I don't remember his real name) in Lafayette, IN. She described him as very awkward and said he always was very full of himself. She also said that all of the windows where he lived were painted black.
