Oasis Reunion and parallels with GNR

The parallels are stronger with GNR and The Stone Roses. We can even ignore them both having Roses in their name. The Stone Roses came onto the scene in the late 80s, released a seminal debut album, did a lot of drugs, took five years to release a follow up, started losing members and then imploded in 1996.

There was bitterness between Ian Brown and John Squire and both were adamant there’d never be a reunion. There was a reunion. They played to their biggest crowds ever but Ian Brown’s voice was well past its best and frankly awful. They ended up releasing two forgettable singles, gave up on an album and then split up again.

To top it off, there was that bizarre rumour that Slash was going to join the band in 1996. Out of the fire, into the frying pan…

Interesting!! Yes definitely some overlap there.

Hmm. I don’t know to be honest. Oasis are baked into the culture here - they were tabloid mainstays for many years, so in terms of the general population, more people have may have an awareness of them (the gallaghers) and their music. They’re pretty ubiquitous over here.

GNR are a bit more specialist. People (and by people, I do mean casual music fans or people without a great passion for music) know the logo and the hits, but not the legacy or band dynamics in the same way they might with Oasis. 
 

It’s hard to say who carries more weight. Arguably Oasis are bigger ‘celebrities’ in the UK….  but then GNR can a headline rock and metal festival like Download, as well as a less genre specific festival like Glastonbury or Reading. Oasis couldn’t do Download… so there’s that? I also see far more GNR t-shirts than Oasis t-shirts in day to day life 🤷‍♂️

I don't see many parallels.
Also, GnR was more a worldwide phenomenon. Oasis was a big band but also a bit of a one-hit-album wonder in many countries outside of the UK, while GnR's popularity remained high until the band became inactive.

Off the top of my head from the first two albums I also like Rock 'n' Roll Star, Columbia, Supersonic, Roll With It, Don't Look Back in Anger, Cast No Shadow, She's Electric, Some Might Say, Morning Glory and Slide Away.

I love ‘Shock of the Lightning’ off their last album, Dig Out Your Soul. Really cool track. Enjoy the b-sides too.. ‘Round Are Way’, ‘D’You Wanna Be a Space Man’… love a few tracks off Be Here Now, the production sucks but ‘It’s Getting Better (Man!!)’ and ‘I Hope I Think I Know’ are so catchy.

‘Rock N’ Roll Star’ is probably my favourite though. It’s a bit like ‘Welcome To The Jungle’, or ‘Good Times Bad Times’ by Zep. Just a barnstorming opening salvo, a mission statement that distills everything that’s great about the band from the off.

Saw Oasis 4 times between 95 & 96. Those were religious experiences. The 2nd gig in March 96 being the best of the lot. Absolutely zero aggro at any of those gigs outside of crowd sways at the Slane gig in 95. I travelled at least 30-40 yards without ever getting more than one foot on the ground and at times none. They stopped the gig a few times to get to sorted out.

The best of those gigs, the Point Depot gig in March 96, was featured in the Supersonic documentary. First time was in 95 supporting REM, that March gig the second and I saw both nights in Cork summer 96 also. 
The Prodigy supported both those nights in 96 and they were at their peak. The Bootleg Beatles were also on the lineup. I only went the second night as I got a ticket for £10…..

I saw them in Cardiff in 1997 i think it was Travis supporting which seemed strange then and stranger now. I remember going back to my mates afterwards, drinking all night. His mum came down to get ready for work while we were still pissed watching the big breakfast listening to music before leaving for school. I just remember puking behind a van on the way in full school uniform after eating a cream cake on the way.

So jealous right now. I managed to catch them on the Dig Out Your Soul tour, but I'd LOVE to see these guys again.

Oasis actually has (or at least had) a lot of the magic early GnR had in the sense that there was alawas a looming sense of legitimate danger. Anything could happen. Anyone could flip. It could all go tits up in seconds. But when they were on, they were one of the best things in the world. They're massively underrated outside the UK and especially in the US imo. I was playing Be Here Now and after that some compilation stuff in the car yesterday and it's just absolutely brilliant.

Yeah definitely bigger than Gnr in the UK I wouldn't even say it's remotely close. Gnr were basically flavour of the month for a bit then essentially forgotten as trends changed. Don't het me wrong they have retained a pretty big core fan base but that's because they were great at what they did. But I wouldn't say they influenced popular culture in any way really.

Oasis on the other hand were in the center of popular culture from about 1994-1999. I don't know if influenced is the right word but they left a mark music, fashion etc in a way that dont think gnr ever did.

I suppose it's a British thing really and what you can get away with. It was easy for me to get a pair of Clark's shoes, a tidy Ben Sherman top and a feathered haircut and didnt really look too much of a bellend. Its a bit different if I got on the bus one morning in a pair of leather trousers, naked from the waist up wearing a fucking top hat.
