Nosaj Thing
Transcription for those who can't or won't watch the video:CONAN: Joe, this book, you are unsparing in this book. You talk about the highs, the lows and what's pretty compelling which most people don't realize is that Aerosmith, you guys get started. You're one of the biggest rock and roll acts in the '70's. Hugely successful and then you guys all fell on hard times, to the point where you were forced to sell your favorite guitar. I'm a guitar buff, 1959 Les Paul. This was the guitar, that was your guitar that you used on all of these classic songs that everybody here knows and you had to sell that guitar?JOE: Well, it was -- let's see, 1980 -- I just left Aerosmith and was Christmas time and I needed some bread and actually I was playing Stratocasters a lot around then. That was the best guitar to sell, I could get rid of it quick because they are very rare. Like you said, you know the value to them. So anyway I sold it and really didn't think much of it.CONAN: Probably sold it for nearly -- a fraction of what you would get for it today.JOE: Let's just say I didn't bid it out. There was no eBay or anything like that back then. I called up one of my dealer friends. Anyway, so time went on and over the years the band got back together again and we started -- started to have some success again. And I thought maybe it would be a good idea to maybe I could find some of those old guitars that had gone the way of the wind, you know. So I started looking for this one. I had all of my guitar techs out looking everywhere. Brad walks in and said "I know where your guitar is." He opens up the guitar magazine and the center fold had Slash's guitar collection and right in the middle was that guitar.CONAN: Slash ended up with your guitar?JOE: Yeah. Changed hands and ended up in his hands. He's made no bones about the fact he's been a fan of the band. And, boy, when I -- I called him up and he was like "oh, please don't ask me, man. Don't ask me that."CONAN: Did you say I will buy it back?JOE: I said I will pay you whatever you want for it. It doubled in price by then. And he said, listen, I will think about it. I called him back and over a series of months go by and I'm talking to him. Every -- I would ask him and finally he stopped taking my calls. I finally had to -- I had to sit him down.CONAN: Slash just put his hat over the phone.JOE: I don't want to hear that anymore man. I knew it was getting in the way of our friendship. I said I will never ask you about it again, man. If you ever want to sell it back, just give me a call, whatever but I won't bug you about it. And at my 50th birthday, Cheap Trick was playing. They came in to play. And I sat in with them and in the middle of the set my guitar tech walks up and hands me this guitar. And it was the guitar and Slash gave it to me.CONAN: Slash gave it to you? That is a sweet guy. We have -- our personal experiences, we have done a lot of bits and things with Slash. He is one of the nicest guys you ever will meet.JOE: His heart is so big, I don't know how it fits in his chest. He's amazing.CONAN: That's a scary description. We have to get Slash medical attention!

ZoSoRose
Jesus Christ, I can't imagine giving away a '59 for free. That is THE electric guitar, the holy grail.I did get to play a genuine 1958 last year at a store in Lansing, though! Best guitar I have played, but it was $100,

Intercourse
This is plainly not true, Slash is manipulating Joe, Conan and the rest of the media to make himself look great in this story. This man must be stopped.
Naupis
I know when you're rich everything is relative, but that was a hell of a generous gift. Slash likely paid a small fortune acquiring it, and at the time he gave it back to Joe it had likely appreciated significantly as the market for those is insane.Doing a good deed is one thing, but that was way above and beyond considering what it was likely worth as well as the fact he is personally obsessed with guitars so giving up one with that lineage was probably tough as he probably really liked it. The Black
This is plainly not true, Slash is manipulating Joe, Conan and the rest of the media to make himself look great in this story. This man must be stopped. It's simply unbelievable Slash will go to such lengths just to spite Axl.I mean look at all the people he has to pretend to be nice to, that's a hell of a job he's pulled off all his life.I totally understand Axl now, Slash is a vicious cancer that must be stopped, he's spreading fake sickening love to everybody and laughing about it behind everybody's back. I bet Slash just went to Gibson and said: "hey, replicate this guitar for me", got it for free from Gibson and gave that one to Joe. All this time Joe thinks he got his guitar back, but it's a copy, and Slash is menacingly laughing playing Joe's real guitar on the toilet. That Slash!
dalsh327
I think at first Slash was going "fuck no" but he understood why Joe gave it up at the time, doing it as a birthday gift was the way to go but he was hoping Joe wasn't going to ask *L*. WAR41
At first when I was watching the video I couldn't believe that Slash was apprehensive about giving it (selling it) back to Joe, a guitarist who had such a big influence on him. I am admittedly not a guitar buff, but once I started reading about it I realized how big a favor Joe was asking. Amazing gesture by Slash in simply giving it back to him for his birthday. How else could you do it though? Haggling over the price with your musical idol is a no-win situation.
moreblack
And Aerosmith was coming off the success of a pretty long streak of big hits and albums, so Slash could have easily asked him any price and Joe would've paid it.

maynard
I heard he named that guitar "Dollar" because Slash names his stuff after things he likes. "Snake" is already taking swimming lessons.

alfierose
They should have negotiated a time share on it. Six months each per year.Perhaps Joe has one of Slash's missing guitars in his collection. Wonder if he's checked?
