Slash comments on talking with Axl again - "It was probably way over due. It's very cool."

Recommended Posts

"Still, that didn’t mean Sorum couldn’t put some thought into his drum tracks… “The one thing I always tried to do was create a good intro. ‘Pretty Tied Up’ has the trippy hi-hat at the start, real signature things. That was always my thing, creating a signature.

“People joke with me a lot about ‘November Rain’ asking why I did that tom fill so much. I wanted to create a signature, a musical part of the song that was a hook so I kept doing the same fill. That same fill leads through ‘November Rain’, ‘Estranged’ and ‘Don’t cry’. The reason I did that was because those three songs were a trilogy so I tied them together.
“Axl told me they were a trilogy and the videos were all connected so I said, ‘lets make a drum sound that’s connected.’ That’s the kind of s**t we’d talk about!”

Here ya go.

"The track I get the most amount of grief for, from drummers, is November Rain. The reason I did that tom fill so many times is I felt it was a musical part. A lot of drummers were like, 'Why'd you play the same fill so much?!'"

"Me and Axl were sitting in the studio late one night, having a couple of drinks and listening to Elton John, a song called Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me."

"Axl goes, 'Do you hear that?' I'm like, 'Yeah, I love Nigel Olson, man'. He says, 'Do that on the song we're going to record tomorrow!' We'd rehearsed it but I didn't have all the fills and stuff, it was just a groove. In the end of November Rain I get into that whole marching band trip."

So, he gives three conflicting accounts. One it was his idea, the other it was Axl, the third it was a collaboration between 'em. Axl isn't the bad guy in every situation.

Not really. He claims to be a part of it and obviously played it physically by choice but the latest account is completely accurate. Listen to the song. It has the EXACT same fill. This was during Axl's phase of trying to be Elton John, as well. The drum fill was by Axl's instruction.

Holy fucking shit, I've only just seen this and didn't believe it until I watched the video.

Best GNR news since, well...Slash announced he quit.

Regardless of what happens, those guys ruled the world together for a time and it would be a shame if they couldn't let bygones be bygones.

Would (obviously) love to see the two of them onstage together again.

After sobering up I considered that Slash is refering to them both signing off on each others projects, not really had a conversation. The source is shady, its in some weird viking language and probably. Out of context again. And suddenly Axl is great again?

I think they should do it even if they hate each other. Think of the money!

Exactly, Slash said this exact thing a few months back and when asked about it later he said they weren't in touch.

Seeing as no one could work out why they hated each other so much, being back on friendly terms is completely bizarre. Now you friends, still no reunion? Marty we missed something, weve got to go back in to the case. Ugh Beth.

Yeah in the making of the video of November Rain he says Axl told him he wanted Nigel Olson type fills for the song. Edited by ChineseIRS

Some thoughts:

1. If there is a reunion, what becomes of the unreleased material from 1998-2008? Does it stay unreleased? Does it go on a boxset?

2. What about future lineups? Will Richard stay? What about Frank?

If he really still wants to put that shit out he could do it under his own name, like he should have in the first place. Or even a different band name if he wants to keep that "collaborative" illusion alive.

He can keep nu guns running as a side thing if he wanted to.

Unreleased music in the case of reunion... my guess would that it would be shelved. And that it would probably come out years later under Axls name (what everyone originally wanted him to do). I think that unreleased music would get a much fairer shake if he had worked with the old guys (mended bridges) and then worked on the strength of his own name.

2nd very unlikely (a lot of unlikely things have just happened) option is Axl has Slash play on CD II, they work up a signable contract that makes Slash and equal member of GnR and they get the band back on the road, or at least a version of the band.

3rd option is that it gets released as a huge CD collection, but years down the line.

I could see Richard and Frank staying on. Izzy would not want to tour as much as Duff, Slash or even Axl. The drummer issues will be, Matt or Steven? both choices are filled with problems, so sticking with Frank might not be the most popular (on here especially) choice but It could mean getting things done, and a little less drama (not that Matt brings the drama, mainly talking about Steven).

Obviously getting a full UYI or even AFD reunion would be the dream scenario. TBH I'm just happy to hear that the feuding has been put to rest, and if they never do anything musically that will be more than a bummer, but at least the they've finally put their shit to bed. By this time next year we might have seen Axl and Slash sharing a few stages together, amazing to say that's not a complete pipe dream.

Interesting thought. Maybe they we trying to figure out a way to market the reunion as a one time tour and then have it to where everyone can go off and do their thing again

Waiting for news on this is like this news story...

Nov 1st 2020: Axl and Slash Kiss and Make up.

Whilst enjoying a porn movie all original GNR members completely oblivious to the fact they had fans actually re-united tonight. As if by accident the lights dimmed then bang (and it was a good bang) the entire band appeared on stage sporting Keith Richards esque smiles and an incredible array of new songs. The fans then went wild. Guns N Roses are no longer the new Rolling Stones. They ARE Guns N Roses.

So I reached out to the interviewer asking him where he had got the info from.

He said from the CBS interview.

The Swedish part just makes it all seem more legit to my fevered mind. They're trying to trickle out this idea that fences have been mended. Where better to do that than in fucking northern Sweden in the dead of night? Who the hell would pick up on that? It's like something a Bond villain would come up with. Or Axl, who pretty much is one these days.

What they didn't count on was the rabid fanbase guns still has. There's no whispering news like this. And those are the same rabid fans that'll fill stadiums all over the world if they follow through.

Exactly my thoughts, they've put out a little whisper... just a little comment where it's least likely to get picked up, and now they're gauging the reaction.

It's also interesting that now that's hit mainstream press that there is still no comments, none at all, not even a denial, rebuttal, or even a "no comment".

I disagree. And thats mainly cause I think Slash is very careful with what he says about Guns. I don't think the location of the interview had anything to do with it. Its the internet, where essentially everything gets picked up. I don't think, if this is real, that Slash was like "oh, I could say it here cause no one's ever gonna read this." No, he's smarter than that. He knows him saying something along these lines will get picked up instantly, if not for any reason other than its how the article would promote the interview. If you don't think thats gonna be the headline you're crazy, no matter who the publication is, and he knows very well that'll get picked up. So either there's been a miscommunication, or this is a legitimate first step at least to friendship. I won't even say reunion. But Slash knows what he says and this has made the rounds today. I would hope if its not true it would have been clarified by Slash or his management or something at this point, which it hasn't so I'm still praying its true.

A few other lingering things I've seen: while I get some of you are interested in the unreleased Chinese material (certainly if its there I'd want to give it a listen), it 100% absolutely goes on the backburner for a Guns reunion. Thats not even a question. I honestly wouldn't be shocked if it ever gets released at that point, as essentially right now there's no proof it ever will. But Guns reunion trumps everything Axl's been working on and we wouldn't see it for years. Again, if there's even a market for it which I get there is for us but literally almost no one else. As for touring with a reunion, I don't think Slash gets on unless its a full reunion. You can kiss everyone in NuGuns goodbye, which is unfortunate cause I love Richard. But come on, let's not kid ourselves here. Slash isn't touring with people from that new band. A drummer? Thats either Steven, but at worst its Sorum and I don't even think thats a question. Slash is very close with him and there's no way he rejoins and Sorum somehow gets passed over. As for an Izzy replacement if he wouldn't do it? I'd be shocked if it didn't go to Gilby. Maybe in a dream it would be Richard, but I think you get Slash on board and he and Duff and even probably Axl would know it'll go back to being the older guys. I think thats a no brainer but maybe I'm way off.

Honestly I'm not going to read to much into this just yet till we get more proof that the two are "cool" with each other now. I'm not sure how I would feel about some sort of reunion just yet, I mean wouldn't any type of reunion basically mean the end of Axl's solo experiment officially (which in a way would suck) ? And which reunion would it be, a band creating new music together or a flashback tour ?

If this does progress any further it will be interesting where it all goes there are a lot of paths.

IF!!!!!!!! Anything ever comes from this, I don't think Axl is just going to kick Richard Fortus to the side. Axl is a pretty loyal dude, and Fortus has, to my knowledge, never said one negative thing towards Rose... ever.

I would like to Fortus and Slash jam together
