Hands down. 2002 I just couldn't reconcile in my brain that the guy on stage with the cornrows was the same guy I'd seen 9 years previously. 2006 was better, but still bizarre. 2010 onwards he looked much better but had fashion (and moustache) issues . 2016 Axl is a complete throwback to the vintage years, in terms of how he looks and sounds on stage. Kinda like an aged version of his Yesterday's video look. yeah the cornrows were an unmitigated disaster! he looks great now IMO...

Just watched 3 times in a row The moment when Slash looks up at Axl after the solo and points towards him... Holy shit... Everything is great until Axl sings. I'm so over his weak vocals with GNR after hearing what he did with ACDC. At Vegas, his vocals sucked the energy out of too many songs. And in Detriot, with ACDC ingrained in my mind, it's just a shame. Sing the fucking songs already, Axl!! Just think BIB, and sing Rocket Queen. And do that for the entire setlist, ya know, like a professional singer does it. Like you did it. With Angus. It's enough of this Mt. Everest voice.
SoNobodyToldYaBaby
Its been what 6 years since Axl sang Rocket Queen with rasp, do you not think maybe, just maybe HE PHYSICALLY CAN'T anymore?

It sounds better to me. The same goes for Rocket Queen, You Could Be Mine and Jungle (which was excellent). I watched all the videos from the Detroit show and most of AXL/DC videos. I don't know much about vocals and I'm not a musician, so maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that Axl uses exactly the same technique and puts the same amount of effort with both bands. He didn't sing every AC/DC song with full rasp like Back in Black or Thunderstruck. In most Bon Scott songs he combined clean voice with some raspy parts (and imo he did a great job, especially in the last 4-5 shows). So why is he expected to do all Gnr songs like BiB? In Detroit he sang e.g. Rocket Queen and YCBM the same way he did with AC/DC songs that require more singing than screaming. Maybe this doesn't work so well with some Gnr songs (or there's the impression that it doesn't because he used to do them with rasp in the old days) and the main reason could be the structure of these songs; as mentioned by someone above (sorry, I can't find the post), GnR songs have more lyrics and as a result there isn't enough space for breath. In conclusion (just my opinion, of course): - Compared to AXL/DC shows, Detroit was at the same level of vocal performance, stage presence and effort. - Compared to the first reunion shows in April, he was better. - Compared to his 1991-93 self, yes it's not the same, and how could it be? On the other hand, he used to put more rasp to Sweet Child than in the recording and it didn't always sound very good, and Jungle wasn't always that good back then as it was in Detroit. - Overall, the Detroit show was amazing from what I saw. koldweather
Civil War was one of the better songs of the night vocally for me, and thats up there with some of the better performances. I think his voice in the first chorus is what I'm hoping emerges mpre consistantly, which is a nice hybrid between clean and rasp. I love the biB rasp but even by show 12 of the Euro ACDC tour you could tell his voice was starting to really struggle...and GnR are longer and the tour is double the length, I think he is being very wise with how he is singing at the moment. He could probably go all out, but I think his won't make the end of the tour if he did that. The best song IMO, OTGM, I think he nailed that. Ps, LOVED that SCOM ending, Axl just looks at Slash with such a massive grin, almost like he is transfixed. It must still be so surreal to the band to have Slash back doing what he does best. Popular Post IncitingChaos
I don't see how anyone is complaining about Axl's vocals in Detroit...guy sounds incredible. I like what he's doing with his voice, even when he's off You can hear he's trying to do more to get out that classic Axl voice with some rasp or atleast making his voice project fully instead of holding off. He's going to keep getting better

In SMKC Slash often ended his show Slither, Paradise Slither should replace The Seeker permanently! Good list of alternatives though. Surprised to see Sorry there over say IRS which, stylistically anyways, has more of the classic Guns vibe (and Slash would probably tear to shreds). Mildly disappointed that Whole Lotta Rosie is on there still. Now that Axl is doing the AC/DC thing there's no need for AC/DC covers in the set. That's precious room for another gem. I like Don't Cry where it is but Patience is a must every night. No harm in sticking one earlier in the set. It's not like either is particularly demanding vocally so no problems doing both.
Stro
Civil War sounds about 1000% better now that everyone is performing it at the same tempo, unlike the warm up tour shows.
