Moby comes from a punk background? I never knew that.

Maybe he comes to his veganism via hard core punk and its straight edge thing? I figured he was some sort of new age person.

He even released a hardcore punk (if you want to call it that) record in 1996.

Mind blown! What?! You were right when you said how Axls ambitions for industrial and techno would be well served by Moby - this track shares sonic space and attitude with Oh My God! I had no idea. Neat! What kind of a Guns fan am I? Based on Moby's big hit(s?) I viewed him as the almost like Warholian ambient musician of his time and looked no further.

In this thumbnail he looks like every militant animal liber I've ever met

Learning this also makes the notion of him being involved in a 'beef' with a rapper make a lot more sense.

Moby the Dick.  Sorry, couldn't resist.

He is great-great-great nephew to Herman Melville author of Moby Dick. His name is in reference this Melville book, his true name is Richard Melville Hall.

Isn't that store in the 8 mile area?  I remember seeing the sign on the show.

It's near 8 Mile, yeah. 8 Mile is very big though and covers a lot of area. It runs through very affluent areas as well.

Moby just counted the years between UYI and his arrival. The only stuff that had been done at that point was farting around with loops and jamming ideas while auditioning potential band members.

A significant amount of the vocals were recorded between 1997 (post-Moby)-2000. The Sean Beavan version of the album was done with aim for a '00/'01 release, then Bob Ezrin came in and told Axl it sucked, which triggered a massive setback and a whole set of new recordings including the Bucket and Robin compositions from then until around '04 when the label stopped funding it, then tinkering, overdubs and mixing until it was finished in '07, with the label figuring out htf to release it throughout '08. Most of what ended up on the album had already been written and (vocally) recorded by 2000, with later material being saved for later albums in the supposed trilogy.

Roughly.

Sigh... if only Ezrin had just told Axl what he wanted to hear that night, so that we could’ve gotten the more “raw” version of the record (plus more records that would’ve likely followed)... then again, we would’ve never had shit like bucket’s awesome solo on TWAT, probably. Hell, for all we know, the reunion with slash probably would’ve never eventually happened either, cause my guess is that CD would’ve performed better commercially had it come out in 2001, instead of 2008, thus giving Axl no good reason to really reconcile with slash.

oh well. Guess I can’t give ezrin too much shit, if he was just being honest.

Moby and Eminem are using repetitive samples, while Axl never did that...yeah, i know, he wanted to...but Moby and Axl really makes no sense at all.

That is not what we are talking about. When you look at Moby's history and Axl's vision for CD, as a producer, that combination would make more sense. I'm not saying that Axl and Moby would be the perfect combination, it obviously wasn't, but it makes more sense than Eminem and Moby.

But can we at least agree that all three have ridiculous cartoon names?

And Hardcore Pawn.😄  I hate to admit it but I kind of miss watching those dipshits.

I always wonder how much of that show is staged... it's always the same fights, and then that big ass guy comes along and throws them out of the store while the owners are hiding behind him.

Yeah, a lot of things are staged on reality shows.

Play is a great album. I can't remember where I read it, but I think Axl was a fan of  Animal Rights (The Moby Album)-it came out in 96-I bought it at the time after reading Moby was going to produce GNR-I really didn't care for it that much.

Moby writes about it in his Porcelain memoir. Says Axl phoned him while driving around LA at night playing the record.

A lot of his Porcelain memoir shocked me. He's a big '80s rock fan, including Kiss and Crue.

That is wild! It's an interesting experience to have ones preconceptions broken down - I'm enjoying it at least. Even if Kiss and Crue arent my bands they have direct links to Guns, so yet another line of Moby's CV suggesting that he could have been a great GNR producer. Thats really intriguing. I might have to check out his memoir.

Yes, I'd recommend it; it's full of surprises, and ups and downs. I'm about the same age as Moby and also had the same musical tastes, although I didn't get into dance until 1994, as the rock I liked was mostly being killed off by grunge (some of which I liked, but found depressing!); Moby's 'Feeling So Real' was my favourite dance tune of the time, so it was interesting to read how he got there, while I'd been unaware! It had the energy I liked in metal, and was more uplifting than grunge! I think I was bipolar then, but didn't know about it, thinking manic depressive meant really depressed!!

Moby was from a dysfunctional working-class family and wrote of always looking for true love, so maybe Axl related to that too, if he knew about it. Moby can come across as a bit of an arrogant self-obsessed liberal city geek diva at times too, after settling in New York, so there is a negative side - maybe Axl saw that side and thought Moby was talking down to him ('Where's the vocals') etc, and that's why he doesn't speak to him?

Ironically, Axl's 'self-obsession' is apparently a reason lots of people don't have time for him!?

He had some hardcore punk friends and liked it, but is mainly vegan from a love of animals - had to fight his family for his beliefs, trying to coax him to eat meat etc.

It's the only part of straight-edge he's stuck to.

He gave up alcohol for a while, but went back to that big time.

He also went out with lots of groupies, escorts and strippers, LA Metal style.

He was also a regular on the NY alternative scene, including a funny description of a glam/cross-dressing  club night, where everybody dresses up as Stevie Nicks!

Talking about Moby. I seem to remember an instrumental track from him from about the late 90s, likely only a demo, with a very melodic guitar lead. I have tried searching for it but can't find it. Can anyone help me out here?

EDIT: It wasn't very wise of me to ask for this, now the morons will start taking down Moby vids too.

This track is so uplifting and energizing!! I could skip my coffee after a listen! Hadn't heard this type of thing from him either. Im getting the picture that he's done whatever style he wanted over the years. I really respect that. Will definiiltey read it.

And the epic sub bass on this track maybe helped Axl fall in love with sub bass. Tickles my brain a bit!

I can see how this track wold hit the spot for you at that point in time!

Well said. Im sure a lot of those factors were in play in their relationship. Axl is a millionaire who still has the vibe of a small town worker. Im surprised to learn Moby isnt from blue blood. I could definitely imagine class identity making Axl feel talked down to in that specific way.

Haha, Axl is a complex person!

I see. He's like a culture chameleon! I thought he was for sure a T-tottaler, but dude parties?!

The groupies and strippers is the most shocking part for me. He sounds a lot like Lars Ulrich. Crazy stuff!

moby is a fucktard. not cuz axl wont talk to him. hes just fuckin weird. too many hellucagenics will do that to you i guess... and although i think he woulda fit in with the sideshow which included buckethead and fincks reverse mullet, im kinda glad he wasnt involved in CD, because it woulda made it even harder for gnr to recover from that album than it already was

And he looks like he has a micro-penis. You know how with some guys ya just know?

Same goes for guys with big schlongs. You just know Steven Tyler and Lenny Kravitz are packing it, the same way you know you'd need a magnified glass to see Moby's.

Apologies Len, was this insensitive of me?
