Even the mid tier epics on UYI, like a locomotive or Breakdown have more soul than these songs....they are musical journeys.

The General is just a repetitive idea...nothing more.

The ironic thing is that thru could have fused it wirh monsters with the same orchestra and THAT would have been an epic musical journey.

Axl has had MORE THAN 20 years to tinker wirh these songs and all he has left in him is repetitive lazy lyrics and bad mixing.

I hope I'm wrong and they release something great that GNR is capable of but....the passion might not be there anymore.

 

Breakdown and Locomotive mid-tier??? ouch!! Those are two of the best in the catalog IMO

My ex girlfriend and I are at the awkward stage to where I ended things (long overdue) and now she's moving out, so we're still around one another for a bit longer.

Every time I still have to deal with her bullshit, I keep thinking: "Ohhhhhhh but it's over now!"

One more day left, then I'm free again.

For all my criticisms of the track, I've had the chorus stuck in my head for a few days so it's obviously doing something right! 

Dodgy mix aside, alongside Monsters it seemed like more of an epic but on its own it lacks impact. I went back and listened to the cell phone leak as I remember that being better than the track and it's interesting that what we thought was The General for years was actually Monsters so I imagine that explains a lot of the reaction as well. The guitars in the leak sound incredible as well. Hope a Bucket/Robin version does leak at some point.

TIL has been a low key hit. It's the highest streamed song off CD on Spotify by a mile. Over 65 million streams (Better has over 34 million, the title track has over 29 million). That makes it the 18th most popular song in their entire catalog.

I will also never understand the hate for If The World in this forum. That was one of the tracks that drew me in to CD. It's epic and funky and just oozes cool. Never mind Axl's incredible vocal performance on it.

if the world is a great song aside from the corny simplistic lyrics in the verses. the vocal performance is one of his best and the music is totally unique in the gnr catalogue. should have been a bond theme.

He said that he didn't intend it to be the final title. It was just a working title for the song idea at its earliest stage, but Axl liked it and kept it, not realizing the silly origin of the name.

We called it “The General” because we were eating General’s chicken. But when I turned it in to Axl, he thought … I was poking fun at Tommy [Stinson] as being like a general.

It's hard to explain- but I find "The General" one of the most interesting post-1991 Guns tracks by far. Much in the same way as "Oh My God" is endlessly fascinating to me as an incomplete sketchbook with promise that got cast aside or something. FWIW, my 3 favorite post-UYI tracks are "Sorry", "Oh My God", and "The General" (in that order). Like it that much. Psyched for the vinyl under the Christmas Tree...

Sorry fits in very well with The General, and Monsters. If only the latter two had the same level of production and mastering. I gotta believe there’s killer superior mixes of those three tracks. The Village I’m Sorry with Axl on vocals would be my favorite mix of that song and I very much believe there’s Buckethead/Robin versions of Soul Monster and The General somewhere.
