AxlRQ93
what's with the music in the general and monsters? I seen people saying they're like Black Sabbath, Ozzy or Marilyn Manson. Any other bands or sounds you think rubbed off on em inspired em musically or are like em?
adamsapple
I get some Bowie, AIC, Soundgarden and yeah some Sabbath/Ozzy vibes from these.
Jwalker19
Nine Inch Nails and Black Sabbath.
Cosmo
I don’t see s lot of Sabbath influence, quite frankly. Not in The General, not in Monsters. Yes, technically everyone that plays hard rock or metal has, is some level, Sabbath influences, but I’d say the NIN influence is way more present. A lot industrial and numetal sounds on Monsters, that’s for sure. A lot more in common witj Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson and similar artists than to Black Sabbath. jekylhyde
Nine Inch Nails and Black Sabbath come to mind first. I also hear a little bit of Korn on The General, those high single notes on the verses. Edited November 28, 2023 by jekylhyde
DefinitelyInThisLifetime
It’s a very King Crimson & Black Sabbath inspired sound. The whole “Daddy Don’t” smacks of War Pigs guttural vocal style by Ozzy and there’s so many magpie moments in the song that have those King Crimson-esque qualities.
Blackstar
In this type of discussions of "what it sounds like/what it's influenced by" everyone hears influences they're mostly familiar with or fond of, and most diehard fans are more familiar with the musical trends from the 90s and beyond. As these songs are originally a product of the early 00s, they're naturally a bit reminiscent of that era (to a large extent due to the production), but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're mainly industrial or nu metal influenced. I think The General is more in that area, but in Monsters I hear mostly a combination of Bowie, Sabbath, Beatlesque pop/Britpop (the poppy chorus and the outro), and trip hop. They sound a lot like Ozzy and even the verses on that song sound a bit like a sped-up War Pigs to me. There's the "Satan laughing" lyrics, which curiously are on both songs... maybe it's an intentional homage?

Originally I thought it was Satan, but after a few listens I’m not really sure.

Even if it's "satanic", it's so close to War Pigs' lyrics I can't help but wonder it's intentional, which would be cool.

Yeah I like to think it’s an intentional homage to uncle Ozz
ZoSoRose
The General sounds like it could have been an early Tool song, kind of. It fits into that thing Axl was going for with Oh My God, too. Monsters sounds like Ozzy in the verses and a GNR song for a lot of the rest with Slash's guitar work
uzi your illusion
I said this in the original thread, I get a ton of late era Faith No More. See "Stripsearch" if you want to know what I'm talking about. FNM toured with Guns and we know Axl had a hand in picking opening acts that he liked, so it's not a stretch. Voodoochild
I hear a lot of hip hop on The General. The intro kinda reminds me of that Eminen's 8 Mile song. 2 hours ago, Sweersa said: Aren't they both industrial metal? Neither.

Ozzy would probably only sing a vocal line like this in his more recent albums. It's almost spoken, not sung. Almost a rap. Ozzy is known for very melodic vocal lines that match the main guitar riff, usually.

The "industrial" stuff are just textures, very minor things. The guitars def have nothing to do with industrial IMO. 1
Jwalker19
People might think I'm crazy, but from day one I felt Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh vibes in Monsters too, mainly due to the vocal effects in the verses. It feels 1970s retro to me.
Popular Post JimiRose
I'll be honest, these two songs sound nothing like any other bands. People can argue thats good or bad. but very few songs have such a blend of so many different things. it kind of sounds like they've thrown 5 genres in a bowl and out its come. lets have some dirty bass, some hip hop drums, a 100 piece string orchestra and blues guitar. hell lets sing the vocals different in each section with a completely different effect on each line

Slugworth
The General sounds a bit like Portishead, especially Dummy. If you've never heard them, here's one of the songs from the album: If you like it, download/stream the rest.
