Archtop
I can't help wondering as we are coming up to 30 years, if you gave 1988 Guns N Roses a run down of where they would be in 2017, what would they have to say about themselves? forget about how they got to this point, its the current tour I'm thinking about. What would they dislike the most, a pseudo-reunion, band members, big budget corporate shows, unchanging set list with a shit load of covers? Would they gripe over the same things we do or would it just be like Holy Shit, yeah we're still alive and making money.

Original
I've got to believe Axl's biggest regret is....ahem (vomit in mouth a little) the fact that he called his non Slash, Duff band Guns n Roses" and the total waste of 1994-2015. All over some stupid drug, alcohol, lawyer, yes men, power hungry, ego trip petty stuff. If Axl's inner circle wasn't so far up his ass they woulda sat him down in say '97-'99 and said "your little Nu GnR thing is cute and all but call Slash and let's go!"
rocknroll41
Id imagine if you go back to 1988 and show the band even just a 1992 show (along with the Don't Cry and November Rain music videos and the documentaries about how those videos were made) they'd be like "wtf is this shit?"
Popular Post delilahrose
While it's fun to speculate and talk about, especially considering that there's no current news at the moment, it's kinda a silly question. Are any of us the same as we were in 1988? I know that they're public figures and we all like to still think of them as those 20-somethings who didn't give a damn about anything other than making great music. But so much as changed. They've grown up. They have children. They've gotten sober. The industry has changed. The world has changed. I mean, imagine telling someone in 1988 that in 2017, people are going to be walking around with their cellphones glued to their hands, taking selfies of every mundane activity throughout their day and avoiding real human contact on a daily basis. And even though we CAN cure cancer and make cars that can run on something other than gasoline, we're not doing it because certain politicians and billionaires would lose money. I'd say, considering how close they all were to death, I think they'd be surprised that they're all still alive. This tour is clearly a cash grab, but wouldn't any of us do the same in our respective fields if we could? As long as the stadiums are full, the tickets are selling, and the crowd in attendance is having a good time, then that's all that really matters.

If there's one gripe I have about this tour, it's Melissa. I have nothing against her personally. She seems like a sweet, fun girl, but she does not fit. I know there are disgruntled fans and haters, and her presence just fuels that fire.
soon
I remember Slash making a comment regarding Axls Illusions vision saying something like: 'you mean you've been planning this the whole time?' That Axl had a secret long-game involving lots of changes and grandure. If this anything to go by, I think everyone except Axl would be appalled, but Axl would say: "30 years? That was my forty year plan! What happened to my trilogy of dark techno rock?"

If Axl's inner circle wasn't so far up his ass they woulda sat him down in say '97-'99 and said "your little Nu GnR thing is cute and all but call Slash and let's go!" Well the thing is -- he has dealt with that regret by doing what he does best, blaming someone else. According to Marc Cantor, he blames Slash for the wasted years. He had grand plans for the 96 album and would talk about it with Marc a lot -- but the guy never did shit. Duff and Zakk Wylde pretty much walked out of pure boredom. I think Duff even says in an interview how Axl kept missing the schedule for releasing the projected 96 album by never showing up to rehearsals and turning down every idea they put forth. Axl spins that to say that the band abandoned him and he was the last man standing. Perhaps -- but dude, you aren't releasing shit. You're not even showing up for rehearsals. Your bandmates are bored and you're rejecting all their suggestions and offering nothing as an alternative aside from saying you want to do what Trent Reznor and Pearl Jam are doing. There's never any indication that Axl put forth any actual concrete ideas/vocals to the 96' lineup of the band aside from "This I Love". Even up till the late 90's when Robin first quits, he mentions that the songs still have no vocals. All that says to me was Axl was just simply uninspired/burned out from music and was basically having the band spin their plates in vain to get him inspired. Them leaving out of frustration instead of waiting a decade for Axl to find his muse makes them the "bad cops". Our hero of course, is Serpico. To answer the question, AFD Axl, Duff and Slash from 87/88 would have yawned and fallen asleep at the 2017 shows. AFD Axl would also have jumped onstage and punched reggae Axl of '02 and Fat Axl from 2011 in the face for the joke/disgrace that they became. Sunset Gardner
i think they would be disappointed with themselves. disappointed that there weren't more albums, more songs, more of a legacy. i think the whole 1993-2016 period would break their hearts. i think axl would be ashamed of himself that he tried to replace his family, his true bandmates. on the other hand, i think they'd be pleased about the reconciliation, i think they'd be both proud and impressed by the body of work they were able to create under such circumstances, and i think they'd be embarrassed by the lazy set lists.
