Richard Fortus (Appreciation Thread)

Recommended Posts

What are the examples of Richard being a shitty guitarist, exactly? Can we get some clips of him fucking up? And does he really fuck up so much that it ruins the enjoyment of any particular song completely? Are there really people who know every note by heart and can tell when he fucks up? Who can even hear Fortuss guitar on those live shows? I sure can't when I watch the videos. And is your experience of a concert or a song then totally ruined? It's just shit from there on end? How the hell is he such a shitty player?

Dude, Fortus is EVERYWHERE. You can hear him clearly everywhere., he is even louder than Slash most of the time.

Ultimately, I think people need to consider Slash and Duff on the matter; if Fortus was really crap, he wouldn't be playing these shows.

I would bet money that Slash and Duff has zero say in it one way or the other. This was Axl's band and he wasn't firing anyone for this reunion to happen.

I don't think anyone has called him a shitty guitarist, they (and I) just don't think his style is a good fit for the band. He obviously has talent.

There have been several threads on this with points like this.

His volume during the April shows was often louder than Slash's. This seems to have improved during the Stadium tour though.. for the most part.

People have said that they don't like his tone. It is too much of a lead player from a Metal bands tone. Too much pre-amp gain. You could hear this immediately during the verses of It's So Easy at the Troubador when his guitar is louder than Slash and it sounded like a synthesizer. A sound that was much more suited for NuGuns.

A lot of people don't like his stage presence and think he looks like an ass clown. I concur.

Some people don't like the fact that he plays lead solos in KOHD and Rocket Queen or at all for that matter. Why is he so important that he needs to play more leads than Izzy or Gilby did as a rhythm guitarist? I don't like his lead playing in Guns N' Roses and I don't think anyone is paying $300 bucks a ticket to see him solo either. Sure he is very talented and technically sound but so is Eddie Van Halen and his style wouldn't fir Guns N' Roses at all.

My personal biggest gripe at this point is Rocket Queen. I hate his contributions to he song and and wish his guitar was on mute. The last thing I want to hear is Fortus playing lead guitar solos during Rocket Queen and his 70's porn rhythm during the jam part is terrible.

Many people don't like his solo in Nightrain. It doesn't ruin the song but why does he need to show off and see how many notes he can fit into that solo. It just sounds out of place.

Those are just a few examples off the top of my head. I was at a show and he didn't ruin it for me but he there were a few times he made me shake my head..

No he doesn't ruin the shows but I feel they would be better without him. All that said he seems a bit more bearable during the stadium tour and I can't wait for my show. Ass clown on rhythm guitar and all.

Okay, I meant it's hard to tell when he is on and when it's Slash. At least for me. Unless they are shooting Slash doing the stuff, how can anyone tell which one is playing what?

Gilby? Seriously? What more can (the sessionist) Gilby Clarke bring to GNR now? Attitude? Give me a break..

Fortus counts 14 years in this band to be kicked off. He's an amazing guy, loyal to the bone, never demanded more to take and a great guitarist too.

It is really simple. It is all about MONEY!

Izzy deserves the same cash as the big 3.  That means splitting the payday four ways instead of 3.

Fortus gets paid way less as an additional musician, that is why he is there.  Axl's employee.

Went to the July 1 Chicago show with a group of people including a 24-year old guy who grew up listening to AFD and UYI, but knew nothing about NuGuns and was not familiar with any CD songs.  His take on Fortus?  "I was kind of digging his style."

I agree that Fortus probably doesn't match Slash's style as well as Izzy did.  But Fortus seems to be true to his own style.  I went in thinking that the Pink Floyd WYWH duet would be meh, but ended up truly enjoying it.  Fine by me if the two of them do more work like that.  Slash is still by far the star lead guitar god, with a dominating stage presence.

I will say that i will gladly take Fortus playing rhythm to Slash's leads  over Slash trying to play rhythm to his own lead guitar on new material

Fortus was the best guy in nuGNR in my opinion, he has the chops and he also is a decent rhythm player.  It is hard talking about the rhythm guitar spot in GNR without mentioning how perfect of a match Izzy was/is, but I do like how Fortus is gelling with the rest of the guys

Is there some sort of Izzy clause where if you like him you can't appreciate any other 2nd guitar in GNR?

Izzy brings out the best in Slash. Fortus doesn't. It's that simple.

Richard is an AMAZING guitarrist but to fit Guns N' Roses with Slash he need to calm and turn his volume down a little bit.
Shredding means nothing when the guy ruins the whole feeling of the thing.

I think the main thing goes to his influences, Richard is a guy that comes from grunge/alternative, so its hard to fit the stonesy bluesy vibe.
