  1. No, this ain’t no weird „fan letter“ or me being drunk or stoned or anything. I’ve just come to the realization, that GNR has been, for the majority of my life, is in the here and now and probably will be a somewhat crucial part of my life. Strange enough, don’t feel any actual „connection“ to the musicians, not at all. I can't picture myself having a beer with Axl or Slash or anyone. But boy do I love their music. For some reason, and no particular reason at all, I just feel a very powerful urge right now to scream out THANK YOU. Thank you for the music. Thank you for the magic. The communication (though the music), the connection, the spirit, the vibe, the soul. And thank you for reaching my soul. Thank you for resonating with my soul. Regardless of how much I want to beat some new music out of you guys - thank you for everything. It's good knowing you are out there while I am out here, all of you, past and present. And I wish you nothing but the best. Same goes for fans sharing my sentiment. That’s all. Just had to get this off my chest. Probably not worth its own thread, so mods feel free to move it as you please or others feel free to chime in if you want. One band to sum it up for me, at the end of the day? One band to speak in my name, the things I can’t express but feel? Guns N’ Fuckin’ Roses.

  2. No matter from which point of view I’ve ever thought about this guy, I don’t think it’s possible for me – or anyone else really – to just fathom his mind-set, or personality in general. I mean, he has to live in a very special kind of bubble. And by this I don’t mean just that classic rock-star business that we probably can very vaguely imagine (the omnipresent fame aspect, chicks in hot tubs, money, not having to work, parties with celebs...). This guy has the balls to do gigs in front of 200 thousand people. Like the Freddie M. thing, yes. Doesn’t rehearse or often attend sound checks, comes hours late while doing god knows what. Then he has studios booked, with musicians sitting in there while he doesn’t show up for months and the money is pouring away. But then he does a gig and nails it and people love him, even when there's nobody else from his heyday music pals in the band. He calls Angus and becomes the singer of AC/DC, with the whole world watching. I think you have to be a bit of a psychopath to pull something like that. He releases an album that became a myth even before seeing the light of day, and then only chats on the internet, never promotes it, and takes a whole year to even start touring it. He knows people grab at every opportunity to see him and yet tends to disappear from the public eye for years, while folks on the internet are left to speculate, analyse 20-year old photos, and download dubious leaks. Sets up social media but barely ever uses them and has at least months’ gaps in those that he does use. Never lets anyone tell him what to do. Drags along his surrogate family with him anywhere he goes, giving off a vibe of a small cult. Doesn’t talk to the media, treats everything as a government top secret, takes years to release anything, and then puts out a questionable tune, to say the least, as the first song. No, I don’t think he’s straight-up lazy (and definitely cannot be characterized by just a single word, whatever that would be), but he definitely is a hell of an idiosyncratic, bizarre, difficult to comprehend, crazy enigma of a character, that’s for sure.

  4. As far as Robin goes I have to say I completely disagree. His solo on This I Love is a masterpiece. But the rest of his work unmemerable? Street of Dreams, ChiDem, There Was a Time, Better ... Man those solos are so amazing and melodic. His impression is all over that album, just as much as Bucket's.

  7. I'm 47 and Guns N Roses has been the soundtrack to much of my life. So I share the sentiment. Of course new albums would be great and I think we all wish for that. But I'm so happy that Axl n Slash not just mended their relationship but reunited in GN'R. Seeing Axl, Dizzy, Slash n Duff together live looking so happy and having so much fun in 17 and 22 was something I never thought I'd see again. So as well as all the great music that was awesome.

  8. While I agree with you that there's a lot of horrible things going on all around the world that should be protested and talked about a lot more, I still agree with the college students that are right to call the universities to divest from Israel and protest a blatant genocide that the Israeli government and IDF are carrying out in front of all the world to see. Of course Hamas is a terrorist group and the October 7th attack was abominable. Still if the response from Israel is to destroy the whole of North Gaza, carpet bomb every hospital, university or residential building or even the UN buildings in Gaza killing approximately 40 000 people, most of which are civilians, they are clearly the bigger terrorists here. And lastly, picking from a long list of unjust things to prostest, an ongoing genocide is kind of top of the list I think.

  10. jokes aside, and I can only speak for myself, it’s not about bad guitarists rather than the prefered styles and the overall sound of CD. And still I enjoy half of that record. But when I compare the NITL singles to the leaked ones then to me the official released versions are nearer to the GNR sound and no wonder because Slash’s sound was added. It’s not necessarily a quality thing.

Well some say I'm lazy And others say that's just me Some say I'm crazy I guess I'll always be But it's been such a long time Since I knew right from wrong It's all the means to and end and I keep it moving along One In A Million is the only GN'R song that I wish it had only one verse - this one.

  14. Because his behavior is better explained by pointing to his insecurities, long periods of depressions, manic periods, and a possible belief that rehearsals do more bad than good. Furthermore, there is nothing lazy about doing 3 hour shows when a lot less would be enough, and stepping in for AC/DC, especially considering Axl's stage fright. And finally, if he was truly lazy and that was a distinct part of his personality which shaped his behavior, that would have been pointed out by people around him, especially when people were attacking him in the media. He has been called all kinds of things, but as far as I can recall, never lazy by anyone he has feuded with. On the contrary, people - including Dizzy, Bumblefoot, Dj, Angus Young and Alan Niven - have made a point about telling about how hard he works. To me it is clear that people who simplify this to Axl being "lazy" are themselves being intellectual lazy. They are either unable or unwilling to accept a much more complex explanation for what they observe. Which is human nature - we simply things so we don't have to deal with complexities that are beyond us, it's a coping mechanism for simpletons to navigate in a world that is too complex.

  15. Attributing Axl's super low productivity and output to "laziness" is an overly simplistic and, I should say, even childish and "lazy" in itself, approach. Same goes for when people saying that Slash, for example, "lied" as soon as something he said would happen didn't happen within the tentative timeframe he gave.

  17. I would say he's more likely Borderline Personality Disorder. "Borderline personality disorder is a mental health condition in which a person has long-term patterns of unstable or explosive emotions. These inner experiences often result in impulsive actions, self-image issues, and chaotic relationships with other people. Risk factors for BPD include: Abandonment in childhood or adolescence Disrupted family life Poor communication in the family Sexual, physical, or emotional abuse" The problem is that having a mental illness makes you a poor judge of whether you are mentally well or not. A fish doesn't know it's in water.

  18. Another interview (in French, Rock Hard magazine,): https://www.a-4-d.com/t8416-2024-05-01-rock-hard-france-damned-blues-slash I'll translate in full at a later time (help welcomed!), but here is the part about Metal Chesnut: The record ends with an instrumental called "Metal Chestnut", a sort of “odd one out" that's closer to the Guns N' Roses repertoire than to a song written for a blues record. What's the story behind this song? It was Mike Clink's idea to end the record with an original composition. Having spent a lot of time putting together the covers and their arrangements, I hadn't thought about it. I liked his idea. So I stayed home for a couple of days to work on some ideas. "Metal Chestnut" was written on the last day of rehearsals for the album, just before recording. It's an instrumental that I think is rather inspired and came about spontaneously. If people think it sounds like Guns N' Roses, maybe it's because I'm in that band! (laughs) The rest is mostly the same stories about the recording of the covers and a bit about the performance at the Oscars. He says again that he'll start working on a new SMKC album (has already written a couple of songs) after the blues tour ends, and that GN'R has no tour planned. Doesn't know when a new GN'R album will come out, but it will be after the next SMKC cycle and all new material.

  20. This. There have only been 3 iconic reunions in music history. Zeppelin, Floyd and Guns. Shame we will never get to see that Troubadour show.
    6 points
  21. No, they shouldn’t have stopped after AfD. As iconic as that album is, it was the UYI tour that catapulted them to the top of the rock world back then. With Appetite only, I’m not saying they would have been forgotten, but they wouldn’t have been anywhere near the position they finally achieved. What they should have done is settling the differences after a few years, stop bickering like kids, and reunite no later than in 2006 (or even 2002, as long as Axl wouldn’t have had that voice). Instead of that, they wasted another decade. And tempus fugit.

  22. What irks me about Axl's lack of productivity is that GNR are my favourite band, bar none, and yet I never listen to them anymore. And I'm sure I'm not alone with that. No band will ever move me the way GNR did and I cherish all four of their proper albums, but it's just such slim pickings. There are bands I don't like anywhere near as much as GNR that I listen to far more regularly, simply because they have a wealth of material to discover. It's a shame. I'd love to look forward to new releases from my favourite band, but life's a shit and rarely gives you what you want.

  25. Don't forget starving them to death UN accuses Israel of denying Gaza aid access as famine takes hold. Israel are not the ones being oppressed and simply fighting for their existence. "Why aren't they protesting other injustices around the world?" is the most tiresome and tedious argument made every time a mass protest happens. As if protesting something your own government is doing is invalid because you aren't protesting something another government on the other side of the planet is doing. Speaking of, the suppression we are seeing towards these protests is appalling. Not to mention banning platforms and passing speech laws. I haven't quite seen this country so bipartisanly deranged (except maybe after 9/11) and it only looks like it's going to get worse.

  26. Ya....I had to check the year on my calender for a second, like the dude had checked out on Slash in 2009 ISH and was just catching up on the last 15 years....I was expecting him to go "Ohhh you and Axl are speaking these days?"

  27. But the level of knowledge is the same for any speculation or educated guesses of the kind of "Axl behaves this way or doesn't release music because X or Y". The only thing we have full knowledge of is the result: Axl is not prolific and rarely releases music. The only reason that attributing everything to mere laziness is seen as "telling it like it is" while other or additional explanations are perceived as "defending Axl" is because people generally sympathize less with a lazy person than with, say, an insecure person, so the laziness explanation provides more convenient and less challenging grounds for venting, whereas more complex explanations are usually less emotionally charged (and are not worded in the form of a rant), so they're taken as trying to "invalidate" the fans' frustrations. But, in fact, insecurity or a potential mental condition as parts of the reason for Axl's behaviour doesn't mean that Axl bears no responsibility for it. For example, the people around Axl have changed over the years, but some patterns have been the same e.g. from Doug Goldstein to TB, which suggests that he tends to trust the wrong people to take care of business for him, and that he's prone to being surrounded by sycophants, and that's on him.

  28. I mostly agree with you here. The original NuGuns versions absolutely sound more cohesive. Personally, I just don’t like Robin’s rather weak and uninspired solos. Just my opinion of course. Outside of This I Love, nothing else is very memorable. Bucket is amazing on almost everything he touches of course. As for the NITL singles, Perhaps and Hard Skool absolutely sound closer to UYI than CD. Even the riff and overall music up until the stupid breakdown of Absurd are more like what I would expect of a punkish Guns song. Hell, even The General could have been an epic song if it actually went anywhere. If only someone could convince Axl to let a major producer take charge for an NITL album

  31. The fact they still haven't released a proper NITL DVD (ideally the Troubadour or any 2016 show) still kind of baffles me. I don't count the Selects, that's crap. Eight years. Eight years since the biggest rock reunion of the last decades... and nothing.

  33. That's almost an insult to the classic lineups lol. They never released anything that sounded as disjointed and frankensteined as the NITL singles. The CD tracks don't sound nearly as bad, either. Yea they're leftovers with Slash and Duff playing on them, but that doesn't automatically make them better than anything on CD. The Blues, Sorry, This I Love, etc sound way more like 'GNR' than any of those singles...

  34. Oddly enough, the Robin solo on Perhaps sounds more like GNR than the Slash one. Slash solo ruined the song for me, it's so bad.

  40. I'm not sure if Axl is lazy or not, he's slow to do anything productive. He's not grabbing life by the balls from what I see. He is a peculiar, unique character and I can't imagine anyone else wanting to try and manage him.

  42. I think Zodiac 13, Oklahoma, and Me & My Elvis would make killer songs, and assuming all three were finished with vocals, and maybe Bukethead, they would be. However, the NITL will suck the life out of them if they touch them, much like they did with a majority of the new singles.

  44. If Guns want to get played on the radio then they need to ditch the CD era. That whole era is full of mid tempo songs with no real guitar riffs and lyrics about all the people that wronged Axl in the 90s. People don’t really relate to that.

  45. Probably because most people don't care about the new songs, and nobody requests them. My local station plays tons of GNR too, aside from the hits I regularly hear Don't Cry (Alt version), Mr Brownstone, Nightrain... they played the shit out of SOYL when that was released. I heard Hardschool once when it was released, and Perhaps maybe twice at the most. Of course they're not gonna play Absurd or The General. The NITL singles are mediocre and the production sucks. It's really that simple. My local station has Killing Floor in regular rotation and I've heard Oh Well several times, too.
