Just released today, Guns N Roses new DVD 3d/bluray disc is definitely not your father’s Gnr video. Its been eons since the band has released an official longform video, in fact that release was the “Use Your Illusions” VHS tape. Axl, Dizzy and the new guns are presented here in high def, blazing 3d and the results are pretty cool. The video captures the band during their recent stint in Sin City at The Joint in Hard Rock Casino, Las Vegas.

Despite the looming legacy of the original lineup I find it hard to find fault with the current band or “Appetite For Democracy” which basically feels, looks and sounds like GNR on steroids. Its almost impossible to not compare the two bands but pretty insane since they are two completely different beasts that really operate under much different parameters. This DVD has a lot to offer fans of the original lineup with much of the set culled from their classic debut album as well as material from Gnr lies and the Illusions albums. Watching that classic material performed live it strikes me just how much of a fire W. Axl Rose still has up his ass and how much those undeniably unique vocals still remain largely unchanged.

Songs like “Used to Love Her” and “Rocket Queen” explode off this bluray, sounding amazing, while the band’s stage show with the expected lights, flames and sexy dancers is dazzling enough to almost help you forget you’re not actually at a show; especially if you have a killer surround sound setup. Axl offers the individual band members tremendous chances at the spotlight, whether you’re talking about lead guitarist Ron BumblefootThal and bassist Tommy Stinson singing a lead vocal on their own originals or the memorable performance spots and instrumental interludes provided by other members of the group like guitarist DJ Ashba.

Its hard to bitch about anything here aside from minor setlist wishes (Please put “My Michelle” and “Coma” in the set again if you’re reading this Axl…lol). You could say this is a release for the new school GNR fans or fans of the new lineup obviously but one of the other attractions is seeing the band tackle the “new material” from their last album “Chinese Democracy”. The title track smokes out the gate and the band proudly plays their asses off on some of the better cuts from that somewhat underappreciated album, namely an AMAZING version of the ballad “This I Love”, which smokes. Guns and Roses 2014 is still a hot ticket and will continue to be one if this concert is any indication. The camera work and editing on “Appetite For Democracy” is stellar and fluid, this is a pleasure to watch and I love this and will watch it again. If you are a fan of the band or even mildly curious, you should check this out.

Pitboss...the record label has wanted to put a new GNR release out for many years....what record label wouldn't, if they had GNR signed to the Label?

We talking about a live concert release or a studio album?

We have the impression there was a falling out between Axl and the label based on what was said about Jimmy Iovine coming down to give his input, then he'd go away and Axl would run into problems with the people working for Iovine. Tommy Stinson had also brought it up. There's other artists who had problems with getting their albums out, and it was known as "Jimmy Jail". Trent Reznor had discussed it in past interviews, 50 Cent had complained on Twitter about lack of label support and Iovine being unavailable to him.

We also know Iovine turned Interscope over to someone else to run so he can enjoy his billion dollars Apple just wrote him the check for, so maybe that change is in GNR's favor.

What's up with the writing credits in the booklet? Since when does slash, izzy, and duff get co-writing credit for Estranged and November Rain? Also izzy gets writing credit for Civil War and Slash and Duff for You could be mine and Don't Cry? Sorry I noticed these right away. I've had the writing credits memorized since I was a kid and the UYI albums first came out.

Interesting maybe slash wanted this in order to allow it's release? Lol who knows

I have a feeling Slash was busy touring and recording to care about this but I could be wrong...

I have a feeling he has lawyers who take care of that. It's not as if Axl could say: 'Ha, Slash is busy touring and making the record. He won't notice if I do this or that.' He must've eventually signed off on it, so he had to 'care'. Plus, when GNR was asked about an international release on Twitter, they said they had no clue, because it's in the hands of producers and lawyers.

I guess the legal teams of all parties included had a field day in the handling of this release.

Just watched the show from beginning to end on blu ray! Incredible job, so many awesome shots, and a great way to promote the band. Axl sounds better everytime I watch it haha might just be me getting use to it. But the blu ray was amazing, thanks so much for following through on this project and getting it done. I had my doubts but the show is great for any GNR fan!

As for the record label. Rockfuel makes a good point. GNR will sale regardless. Why wouldn't they want a release of anything GNR related?

Well, this Sweet Child video is vocally awful, but the band is quite tight. Axl never really sounded good on it anyway, to me he never really found the balance between clean and raspy voice as he did on the (perfect) studio version. The mix is ridiculously good, though, congrats to the engineer !

What's the 3D like for those that have the Bluray? anyone wanna comment on it

I have to stop by a Best Buy later today. If they have it in stock, I believe I'm going to cave and buy it based on what I said a few pages back. Rockfuel's continued answering of questions and what not after release is pretty impressive to me.

If the stars align and I end up bringing it home later, I'll run it in 3D as soon as I can to give you my thoughts on it.

I really enjoyed it overall. Axl's voice, IMO, was only weak at some points in Estranged. It definitely showcased the band as a tight unit, lot of horsing around between Axl, Tommy, DJ, etc. Good stuff, I definitely recommend it, and I am proud as a die hard fan of the band, of this release.

this release is a great step in the right direction. There was better gigs to release? yes. But that's not the point here, it turned out fine in every aspect of the release, a thing not common in the GNR world.

I would buy this when its available here.

I echo your last statement whole-heartedly. Well said.

I've watched this on my phone with the app, but I look forward to sitting down and watching it from start to finish on Blu-ray to get the full and best experience possible.

Just got the Blu Ray. Watched a few songs and it looks amazing in 3D. It defaults to 2.0 stereo so make sure you change it to 5.1 in the audio set up or on your remote.

The 3D for a concert was much better than I expected and it adds to the film.

Was just about to post the same thing. I'm working from home so I only had the chance to watch the first two songs in 3D but I gotta say the 3D looks AWESOME. I'm not a big 3D guy but this is pretty impressive. There's a ton of depth and almost no ghosting that I could see in the first couple of songs.

The 2D/3D picture, along with the audio quality is fucking fantastic on this.

Thank you AxlMorris and Russ. I'm so glad you've been watching the 3D version at home, it really does look and sound unreal in both 2D/ 3D and 5.1... a 5 star review would go along way on Amazon :)
