Is there an actual reason some people on here are so butt-hurt by this?

Metallica released a similar product recently, they seem to be held up as the gold standard of how a band should act.

Ah there is is. Return of the 'butt-hurt' comment.

Gnr is a joke, Metallica is not. Nothing to argue here.

I was in a band with a couple of huge Metallica fans back in 2018, we'd bullshit about all kinds of music but I was always a little embarrassed when GN'R (mainly Axl) came up.

They are and they and gnr were peers between 91 to 93. The biggest bands of that time period in no order were gnr, metallica and nirvana. Those bands were everywhere. Metallica just seem to be intune with what their fans want that they make gnr look like amateurs.

Can't say it's one I encounter outside of GNR forums to be honest!

It's been around for a while but it's an extremely remedial term generally used by people can't express their argument correctly.

Someone doesn't like something? They must be "butt hurt". They couldn't possibly have a legitimate concern, complaint or point, they must be "butt hurt".

He has lost that Victory or Death mindset. That’s cool. He is 60. He is definitely one of those artists who probably believed he would die young. As I said, out of everything, I just believe he should have come back in incredible shape and showed the world what a force of nature his live performances can achieve. I feel everyone in the band, the musical band is giving their all in each performance. And I believe Axl does to some extent in that he wants it to be a great rock concert, but he doesn’t appear to have the desire to blow people’s minds. I don’t know if people walk away from a GNR show and say it was one of the best shows they ever saw. And that is what you want from a GNR. No offense to Axl but his newest haircut is just Utterly unflattering. I don’t care how he does what he wants, someone within his camp should be like dude, you need to do something with you me hair.

Not to get into a hair discussion but I think his hair cut now looks normal. It is just a regular haircut. Better than that stringy Rats nest he had. It think it is the giant gut that is unflattering.

Debbie Gibson seems more subversive now.  But I'm okay with that.

Axl is pushing sixty, so he isn't acting like the twenty-something badass he used to be, because he isn't that person any longer.  He's a mellow family man now (without an actual family).  Somehow that makes him less of a musician to some macho rock fans...

I hope they produce a made for TV movie based on the book, like Dolly Parton did with her family friendly Coat of Many Colors movies.  Many of us (formerly) macho fans now have families - so it makes sense to me.

And? Why do GNR need to be 'family friendly'?

If you sat your infants down and talked them through the lyrics of most GNR songs, or even showed them a lot of their artwork, social services would probably investigate.

Fans of pornography get older too. No-one advocates for 'family friendly' pornographic films!

The Metallica argument is absolutely stupid in every sense of the word.

Metallica released their 2008 album about a month before Axl.

In that time, we know what happened to Axl and the gang. But what about Metallica? Hmm.

For one, they have toured each and every single year since then, non stop. I get GNR ‘s main revenue since 2001 has been touring, but averaging 30-40 shows a year is god status. They stayed relevant like the last era of NuGNR tried to do by running the GNR name into the ground, and its what Axl, (suprisingly) Slash, and Duff have done since 2016.

The difference is, Metallica only toured their 2008 album until 2010. Not 6 years later in 2014. Oh, and 3 live DVD’s came from that era for Metallica. GNR gave us ONE from 2012 that isn’t going to be the first thing you reach for when you think of GNR. You might reach for the Big 4 DVD though if someone asked who Metallica was.

Both of these bands had different approaches to touring at that time as well. As I remember the post Chi-Dem release era band toured the world over and played Arenas and played these epic 3 hour shows. All in the name of Chi Dem and fulfilling Axls prophecy that he didn’t need those old guys.

Metallica on the other hand were playing Big 4 shows, and touring parts of the world other American bands would shit their pants in. I think they hit every continent in the world at one point? Fucking Antarctica! 30th Anniversary shows (for $6). Playing with their old friends. Doing ‘Metallica by Request’ tours. S&M2 (and a movie with it...)

Metallica didn’t stop creating from 2011-2015. A time when Axl toured out Chinese Democracy for the 3rd and 4th time. Lulu, as controversial as it was, was a band bored with life stepping out of their thrash/hard rock shell and showing the world they have some more colors then the ones everyone else has used to color them.

Imagine Axl doing that.

Metallica gave their fans the best b-sides of Death Magnetic with Beyond Magnetic. Chinese B-Sides? We had to find them on our own.

Metallica literally had their own festival. Their own fucking festival!! Grant it, they probably lost a shit ton of money in the 2 years it was held, but that isn’t the point in this regard. They went out on a limb and did something in 2012-2013 before it was popular. They even played Ride and Black from front to back and Kill Them All as a fake band named Dehan. While Axl was playing bum fuck fest in the middle of who the fuck knows Texas/Oklahoma for 10,000 guaranteed fans who bought tickets. There is no comparison there!!

Metallica made their own movie using hi-def footage from their own shows!!!! I know people didn’t like it, but holy shit could you imagine Axl releasing ANY footage from ANY era? Haha. Im surprised we got what we got in 2012 to be honest, but compare that to a full fledged movie w/ a soundtrack mastered in a studio of live audio. Again, no comparison.

The Metallica boys also gave us massive re-releases of Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, Garage Days AND Master of Puppets. All remasters came with a good “b-side to trinket” ratio and I want to say all of them came with live-shows of their respective era.

Metallica also had crazy and cool collaborations. Off the top of my head I remember them now having a Giants/Sharks/Warriors game night in San Francisco. Each band member got to create a pair of Vans. I think they had a watch collab as well. All sorts of shit. Stuff you actually want to buy. Their name has been everywhere and with everyone this last decade. I think they were even on the Grammys with Lang Land, and then AGAIN with Lady Gaga, at some point in the last decade? How long have we said “Axl and the guys are going to show up at *so and so award event*” What did we get? That meme of a Revolver award show a couple of years ago. Holy shit, I don’t think I could ever watch that show back it was so bad.

Mix in all of that with the fact that they’ve been doing a live bootleg program for awhile now, and have recently been recording and live streaming each and every show. Something we as GNR fans cant even do on Youtube anymore.

Metallica raised $17 million dollars for the California wild fires of 2017-2018.

And heres one I cant argue for GNR: Metallica gave us a new album in 2017. 9 years after their last, and their tenth. TENTH.

Oh yeah. And theres talk of another one coming.

Both were inducted into the R&R HOF around the same time. Thats about the only comparison I can stand between those 2 post 2008.

Since 2008. Jesus, it feels so long ago.

In conclusion: don’t come here with a bullshit argument.

Good post.

Add to this during the death magnetic shows you could also log onto their site and download soundboards at the end of each show.

Metallica are in a different league now. They moved forwards, they make efforts to engage, they offer quality products time and time again (their reissue packages always look excellent and are reasonably priced), they write and record new material which they tour and which fans debate and discuss the merits of; it's not even a comparison. It's quite funny really that people should even compare them with GNR in 2020.

Yea gnr are kinda still stuck in the 90s with the way they're handling things. And it's weird since a little kid like Fernando is running things who grew up in this day and age

Kinda? Even their gig shirts are all based around an album that came out in the 80s! It's like they're in a time-warp at the moment.

I do feel that people on here downplay anything GNR related and are waaaay too eager to suck off Metallica.

Like this post here, glazes over GNR since 2008 while praising Metallica. Now they do have far better management than GNR especially on the social media front (their youtube videos are cool and GNR should take notice).

But just to bat for GNR's side:

In 2009/2010 we had Tour's with Axl at the top of his game with setlists packed with songs from the most recent GNR album.

In 2010 we got the Rose Bar acoustic show (drools).

In 2011 we got live streams of some of the US shows (Bring this back TB!!).

In 2012 We got the Hiro Ballroom videos + extensive worldwide touring

In 2014 We finally got a live DVD from the CD era band.

And guns have done a bunch of charity stuff over the years, putting funds from streaming concerts, signing items for sale, actual performances.

Now yes GNR have had an incredibly small set of official released physical CD's/DVD's from the CD era (2!)

I'm not saying that GNR couldn't learn a lot from Metallica but to ignore the great stuff that has happened over the years is one of the main reasons Team Brazil views this place as a constant source of negativity. There has been good stuff over the years.

LOL, there's a reason for the negativity here and many other places on the internet regarding GNR. I can only think of two places with blind positivity about GNR and they're both ghost towns. Not because people don't want to be positive about GNR, but because GNR gives fans little to nothing to be positive about.

Do an honest comparison of the things you've listed that GNR has done over the past 10 years versus the extensive list of what Metallica has done. There's just absolutely no comparison. That's no one's fault but GNR and TB. So the fact that TB thinks of this place as negative goes back to how they've handled things. It's certainly not the responsibility of the fans to just act like things are better than the are.
