Yeah there's no way the drums on HS are real.

I read somewhere that Melissa programmed them using samples from Frank's live kit, but that could've just been a post here a couple years ago. There's just a couple spots that sound either super digital like the very first few notes, or make choices that no drummer would make like the missing kick drum at 0:16. After the first verse though it never ends up bothering me.

I'm so desperate for music that I'd even take a Hard Skool (album version) with Brain's drums and the Village sessions intro as a separate track.

For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone thinks The General is coming up next, and I’m even more confused as to why everyone wants it so bad - there is so little that can be heard in the cellphone clip. Stylistically, it doesn’t sound that much different from State of Grace.

Paul is a great songwriter going from what have heard so far.

You don’t hear that too often given how he was wrongly made out to be the Pantomime villain in the demise of the old band, but his name is next to some of the best material on Chinese and I hope there’s a lot more of his work still to come.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it's the only song that is 100% confirmed to have actual vocals that hasn't leaked? That plus the intro being played at soundcheck and getting list as a set alternate, while Atlas hasn't been mentioned at all outside of the Spotify stuff.

Do you think the tracks lack lyrics or just the vocal melodies?

We know there were ideas for vocal melodies to Quick song and lyrics to Oklahoma/Berlin.

Axl ran out of creative juice. Happens to most artists as they age. The difference is that most of them continue to churn out stuff that they know is mediocre just to keep their business going.

I doubt he ever did anything else with Quick Song. As far as Berlin goes, he probably did have lyrics, but never got around to recording them (like the Silkworms chorus).

I must say, Robin's Perhaps solo sounds a lot promising than that of Slash's from the soundcheck.

I’m not unconvinced they recorded this in 2020-2021 and were relearning it during that soundcheck we heard. Duff forgot the chords for the climb a couple times under the “what a weight upon your shoulders” section and there was some other sloppy parts that sounded like dudes trying to remember something.

This is the best Axl would sound live on this, and people here would say he killed it…

Man that impression is reaaaally accurate

Except from more power on the low voice, a little more power on the falsetto and less rasp and that would be 100% Axl

Dead lmfao

This sounds so much like how axl will sound on it live that i'm almost convinced it is a leak of a rehearsal. The only thing missing is axl randomly coming in late and speeding up the tempo to catch up. I like how the mickey gets more pronounced as it goes gradually. just like Axl, tries the first couple of lines then it's all helium

Out of curiosity - how do we know this is confirmed? I'm not as up to date on the ever-evolving list of what's out there, what's changed, etc. I just heard the cellphone clip recently and couldn't pick apart any vocals. Also, when was it listed as a set alternate?

We’ve seen it twice. Once in a news article, someone with backstage access posted a pic of the setlist and faintly you could see “The General” on the back. And Once in an official GNR Social Media post, they flipped through a book full of guitar settings for songs. One page said “The G” and the collective consensus is that it is likely The General and not The Garden.

That's what I thought - I saw that, but I didn't think it was confirmed as a list of guitar settings. I thought that could just as easily have been a list of lighting/audio cues - which would make sense if the instrumental of The General was used on prior tours with NuGuns as an intro. I just figured they kept *everything* for reference purposes, including that.

The audio quality of the cellphone clip is very poor, but you can clearly hear the screaming vocals in the end (although not the words, of course).

I don’t think that’s a correct assessment since we haven’t seen that for any deepcut that hasnt been played since then. They would need to have pages for stuff like IRS and If The World by that principle. I think it’s The General, whether or not it even get played or released is up in the air though.

We know there were ideas for vocal melodies to Quick song and lyrics to Oklahoma/Berlin.

It's really hard to say if there are more songs with vocals. At one point around 2006 we were told a few of the 2001-02 duds (Riad, Silkworms) wouldn't be on Chinese Democracy. I want to say we were also told CITR wouldn't be on it. Yet, they were on it or released way down the road. Before the Village leak the only other song we had vocals on that was in general circulation was Checkmate, and that was there too and eventually released. That really does lend itself to the theory that we got all there was. There was a Tommy Stinson quote saying there were 22 songs written and recorded during CD. If 14 were on the album and the other eight are comprised of Absurd, Perhaps, Hard Skool, the General, Atlas, State of Grace, OMG, and Going Down. Then that's 22. Maybe the General is State of Grace and OMG doesn't count, maybe a few of the scratch track songs with vocals were completed. Still gets right around 22. Slash has also implied there weren't that many leftover songs when talking about recording new parts for them.

However, on a more optimistic note some of the songs had vocals added down the line after the Village demos. Better and Shackler's come to mind. Axl gave numbers in the low 30s when talking about "finished" songs. Tommy Stinson and all his Replacements glory is pretty far from what I'd call a reliable narrator when it comes to recollecting on the past. He's fun, but hard to take too seriously. Perhaps there are more songs out there. I liked to believe there are a few more collections of demos like the Village sessions. For instance, in 2006 a few of the songs had been reworked - Chinese Democracy and TWAT. You'd think there'd be more sessions to account for that in some degree. There are also different vocals on the This I Love remix that aren't on the album if I'm remembering right.

As far as Axl's production though. A GnR forum probably isn't the right place to say it, but he's just not a prolific or great song writer. Outside of the early days of Guns in the mid-late 80s, there isn't a lot of documented evidence of him producing a ton of lyrics on his own. From what I gather, he's much more a band leader type of frontman who enjoys the process of overseeing recordings.

Imo after 20 some odd years of trying to piece this together. There probably are another 15-20 songs, counting what we've heard, that weren't released on Chinese Democracy. I don't think there is a vault of finished songs. I think there is a vault of Eye on Yous and Quick Songs and Buckethead solos.
