Slash says what happened with the GN'R name is a "dead issue" (WSJ interview)

The most interesting part, though, is about his relationship with Axl,  how the reunion came about and the business status of the band (a partnership):

Guns N’ Roses’ surprising sturdiness as a touring juggernaut owes much to the rekindling of the friendship between Mr. Rose and Slash.

For Slash, it all started with an inquiry into video footage of the band’s 2½–year, 194-show “Use Your Illusion” tour—a trove he once called “the holy grail of Guns N’ Roses.”

“I was talking to Guns N’ Roses management about making sure all that stuff was intact,” Slash says. “And then, I’d thrown out the idea, ‘It’d be great to find a producer to put this together’” as a film.

As Slash and Axl’s people talked more in the 2010s, Mr. Rose’s team broached the idea of reuniting. Fernando Lebeis, Guns N’ Roses’ manager, met Slash while he was on tour and “said there was something going on,” Slash says. The guitarist shrugged it off. “I hadn’t come around yet—at all. I was really ‘anti’ for years.”

One of Slash’s complaints, which he discusses in his autobiography, is Mr. Rose’s acquisition of the Guns N’ Roses name in the 1990s. Slash viewed this as Mr. Rose wresting control; Mr. Rose, in a post on a fan website, argued he wanted the name for protection because he feared being fired.

Later, when Slash was in Peru, he got a call saying Mr. Rose wanted to talk. The two exchanged niceties by phone. That led to a home-cooked steak meal at Mr. Rose’s Los Angeles residence. After that, one of rock ’n’ roll’s longest-standing feuds ended quickly, according to Slash.

“Over time, and lack of communicating and gossip, and media…all this stuff sort of built up this storm of negativity. But it was like a cloud—you could stick your hand through it,” he says.

Asked what they had to work through to bury the hatchet, Slash demurs. What happened with the Guns N’ Roses name is a “dead issue.”

“I don’t need to say my version is the right version,” he says. Everybody’s version of things “is their own version, their own reality.” He, Mr. Rose and Mr. McKagan remain stakeholders in the business partnership that started in the 1980s. “We’ve always been partners.” (In a bit of lingering drama, Izzy Stradlin, the band’s original rhythm guitarist, who left in 1991, has played no role in the reunion.)

Reconciling with Mr. Rose removed a huge psychological burden, Slash says. “You don’t even realize how heavy the weight of that much bad blood or negative energy feels until you get rid of it.”

- According to Slash, the communication between the two camps started in the 2010's (unknown which year exactly) with him contacting GnR management to discuss the UYI footage.

- Later Fernando approached Slash and then the phone call from Axl followed.

I think you're burying the lede that Axl invited Slash to a home cooked steak meal at his house, I'd like to think Axl made it personally.

There is an important detail: Pele doesn't say "Mr."

It's in the tradition of certain newspapers, like the New York Times and the WTJ to refer to everyone as Mr./Mrs/Ms. [insert last name] in their articles.

Again, it's great news.

“One of the things Axl wanted to get off his chest was a bunch of material he’d recorded,” Slash says. “So we thought, ‘Well, that’s a good way to wet our feet.’” The coming material might arrive in a piecemeal fashion, before being assembled into an album. Work on an entirely new record hasn’t begun in earnest.

So Slash was the first to contact GNR's management and not the other way. According to Axl's interview with Globo TV, they were the ones to contact first so I don't really understand this. My best guess is that he completely forgot about the 2010's contact or he didn't even know about it. Maybe that's the reason Forever Together was buried?

Anyway, they're sitting on top of hours and hours of UYI's footage with the idea of releasing it

They should take the UYI footage and do what Metallica did with their old shows- upload all of them and charge a small subscription fee for access to all the shows.

It's pretty self-explanatory. Slash made moves regarding old tour footage, completely unrelated to any potential reunion, then Axl made the first move about a reunion – as he said in the Globo interview.

Everything lines up and makes sense, we now just have the added detail of now knowing Slash had already been asking the camp about the UYI footage before Axl brought up the idea of getting back together

In an interview from 2010, Slash said he wanted Oliver Stone to direct the UYI documentary:

If your life story where to be made into a movie, who would you want to direct it?

Slash: That's a good question! I don't know, man. I take what I do seriously, but I don't take myself seriously so it's hard for me to get a perspective of how I'd want to be portrayed. You can get really Martin Scorsese-heavy with it, but there's nothing really that warrants that. So it'd have to be somebody with a little bit more levity. I always wanted Oliver Stone to direct the Guns 'N' Roses footage we have in a vault. It's like three years of Guns 'N' Roses touring that we haven't released. That would be awesome.

What about Cameron Crowe who has experience with the music industry? He directed Singles, Almost Famous, and Pearl Jam's Twenty documentary.

For me, the most exciting part is this:

This suggests they are still discussing the possibility of putting out the UYI your film.  Maybe this will come with the UYI reissue.
