I too think this virus is a super virus and will continue to change every chance it gets, but getting a vaccine will hopefully curb a person from getting very sick or dying. Let's hope so anyway, but who knows? Yeah i know right, its like the virus has a bigger brain than us or something.
SoulMonster
9 hours ago, dontdamnmeuyi2015 said: I know right? I too think this virus is a super virus and will continue to change every chance it gets, It lies in the nature of viruses (as well as any living creature, hence why we develop cancers) to mutate. And some viruses tend to mutate in ways that allows them to quickly become immune to vaccines. A prime example is the flu virus, resulting in seasonal flu strains, and the outcome is that we have to develop new vaccines every year. Whether SARS-Cov-2 (the virus causing Covid-19) will also mutate in such ways to evade our vaccine-primed immune systems, is too early to tell. But it isn't implausible that the vaccines we have developed for Covid-19 and have now been approved, only gives us a temporary immunity and that we need to continuously develop new vaccines as we do for the flu. If so Covid-19, like the flu, will likely become fixed staples of the human condition - just diseases that we have to accept as normal. But by then, the effect of vaccines and herd immunity will make it less prevalent and it won't be such a huge problems to us as it has in 2020 and now in 2021.
Dazey
Got to give credit where it's due. Boris and his band of baboons have fucked up pretty much every aspect of governance during this pandemic but on the vaccines we're absolutely smashing it out of the park. Projecting right now that we'll have the entire over 50's population vaccinated by April at this rate.
dontdamnmeuyi2015
My parents got their first covid shot today. Everything was very organized and plenty of police to help them get around the stadium parking lot. It took all of 15 minutes. The longest time was waiting to make sure they got no reaction to the shot. Already got their next appt set up. Hopefully, things will continue to go as well for all of us. SoulMonster
Interesting study on why some countries cope less well with the pandemic than others: The relationship between cultural tightness–looseness and COVID-19 cases and deaths: a global analysis - The Lancet Planetary Health Key term is "cultural tightness-looseness" which says something about how likely citizens are to follow recommendations. More culturally tight countries, like Japan, China, Austria, etc, will tend to do better because people are more likely to do as requested by the government. While more culturally loose countries, like Mexico, USA, UK, will tend to do worse because people are more likely to not adhere to regulations.
Gracii Guns
That's very interesting. There's certainly an IDGAF strain in some people which extends to Covid. The only person I know of who has broken the rules in a big way, is of someone who threw a birthday party for her six year old child. Maybe a dozen kids attended. She's a friend of a friend. She used to be a successful porn actress. Several people tried to report her, but there was nothing that could be done unless the party was still happening. I never wanted to conclude that people who get their genitals out for a job have fewer inhibitions, as that would be judgemental of me.
downzy
Looks all but certain the strain coming out of Britain will be the dominant strain in North America by March. Hopefully the vaccine rollout picks up speed and the most vulnerable are protected by the time the more infectious strain takes over. But how much of this has to do with them rolling the dice on the Astra/Oxford vaccine? I believe I recall them really pushing that one through and hence were able to get a jump start on how many doses were available.
downzy
The WHO says it's extremely unlikely COVID-19 came from a Wuhan lab after spending time in Wuhan investigating the source of the outbreak: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2021/02/09/covid-origin-world-health-organization-end-research-wuhan-lab-theory/4446839001/
SoulMonster
But how about the UK mutant? Was that developed in an English lab? Why has no one investigated this!!! dontdamnmeuyi2015
My parents got notice by email about their second dose of the moderna vaccine. It's in March and they need to just bring their card that was given to them after the first shot. I'm so happy my city is doing a great job with distributing the vaccines in an orderly fashion and as quick as possible to as many people as possible. Some cities aren't doing such a great job. Very sad. it's a race against time.

I saw a CNN special with Anderson Cooper talking to a reporter in China cities and how they transport live animals, including bats and other reptiles and how these crates are just stacked on each other so any secretions any animals have they go into other animals cages. Gross. Also I guess people in China buy their animals live and then take them home to kill them and eat them? Don't they have supermarkets like the rest of the world? Just gross and this is why we have covid. Either way it began in China and spread like crazy. It's still seems unreal on how fast it spread and how after a year we are still trying to slow it down and save lives.

Yeah the UK is doing good so far when it comes to vaccinating The EU really fucked up the whole vaccine thing... I’m from Germany and I’m usually quite content with german politics, but I think the fact that Germany had the EU council presidency during the time when the whole vaccine thing started rolling, really made things worse... German politicians are really into their goal of the „schwarze Null“ which means not making more than 0.35% of the countries gdp in new debt. So instead of making new debt for the order of the vaccine, they rather save themselves (or rather others) to death (literally)
ZoSoRose
So far my mom and two sisters have vaccine appointments this week and one Aunt, and all of my grandparents have already received both doses.
ZoSoRose
The UK's strategy might also, unfortunately, backfire. Data is not looking promising for the Astrazenica vaccine when it comes to the SA variant. Hopefully they can buy enough time before they get more doses of one of the other vaccines. I think the Cansino, Novavax, and Johnson and Johnson vaccines should help too if those are more effective against these new mutations

It looks so pretty, but not driving at all today. I read in today's paper that the companies are working on a vaccine for kids 6 to 17. I hope it gets approved. I want my daughter to be vaccinated soon too.
