rocknroll41
Gave the song a few more spins. It’s growing on me.
North Korean Democracy
It's an unusual lead single, Dark Necessities was far superior even if the guitar it's more interesting in this song. This song lacks a catchy riff, catchy bass line or catchy melodies. I'm still hyped about the album tho, glad it seem it's coming sooner than expected.
EvanG
I've been reading a lot of negative reactions already on other platforms, but I think it's impossible to live up to many people's expectations anyway because this is what the fans have been waiting for since they announced John's return in late 2019. I'm not worried, a lot of their first singles weren't that great in my opinion. Warped. The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie. Dani California (fan favourite, I believe, but I consider many other songs on that album a lot better). edit; I'm worried that he didn't mention 'California' though in the lyrics, unless I didn't pay enough attention... Coma16
I listened to the first minute or so. Sounds good but I would have preferred something heavier as a lead single. Can wait for the album, seems jam packed!

I do actually, it has a mean riff, but it's a rather unorthodox song for a first single, not as radiofriendly as Aeroplane or My Friends. but I personally like that about it. But it wasn't the best first single choice, and I think the same about this new song. The more I listen to it, the more it sounds like a B-song. Not bad, but for a first new song in 6 years it's kinda underwhelming. I felt the same about ''Adventures of Raindance Maggie'' but I ended up loving ''I'm With You''.

I agree with all you've said. Black summer is an underwhelming start but i still have hope for the rest of the album.

Stress Fracture
Anthony Kiedis is the same age as Axl. That was my first thought upon watching that video. Black Summer sounds like a lot of other latter day RHCP songs but it’s alright. This is essentially a reunion. You don’t have to push the boat out on your first song back. betterman
Great song and solo work from Frusciante! One of the longer solos on a mainstream rock song for quite a while, so lets hope it gets some recognition outside the fan-base.
El Guapo
John's solo is great. The song is nothing special, sounds like your typical Chili Peppers song, but I like it. Reminds me of better times somehow. Anthony sounds older but that's not a bad thing. I look forward to the album!
rocknroll41
The music video has also helped me to enjoyed the song more now. Interesting visuals.
Coma16
I just pre-ordered the Purple & Gold vinyl. Glad it comes with digital code too!
rocknroll41
Turns out the new music video was shot inside that virtual dome that Lucasfilm uses to make all the Star Wars shows, and was directed by Deborah Chow (the woman who’s making the obiwan show). Coma16
I'm especially glad they figured out how to release an album, with lead single and music video. Seems foreign.... 1

axl666
Very disappointed in the song, nothing new here at all. Sounds like one of the weaker songs off of stadium arcadium. I hated the vocals. Dark Necessities was much stronger imo. It would be interesting if they got back the classic guitarist and ended up writing worse songs. Saying all that, the visuals in the video were great. I really liked the cityspaces that Frusciante played against.
Nicklord
I listened to it a few times more today. I like it a lot more now. I think I expected to be blown away like I was when I listened to Can't Stop when I was 12 It does sound like a random Stadium Arcadium album track but I think that's perfectly fine to be honest. I enjoy the sounds that 4 produces together

moreblack
That new song's been the only one that's made me give a shit since Californication. Black Summer's the music Hendrix would be making if he were still alive.
