The shows in Europe have had scathing reviews of his vocals.

We've been bitching about it on the forums for years, but the mainstream media has mostly only had positive things to say about the tour since they reunited.

Now, for the first time, it's not just bitter losers on an internet forum complaining about his voice.  It's actual "journalists."

I think that shit gets in his head.

He's been well aware of the fans criticism of it for a while. He mentioned as much in the China Exchange interview. I agree it might get in his head (or it used to), but I think he's been aware of this one and knows there's nothing he can do about it.

Looking at the GNR planes flight history. It flew out to Geneva on Sunday and came back later that day. Whether Axl took a flight to go see a throat specialist to get a better diagnosis? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

What's the REG of the plane ?

I'm almost positive they don't have an "exclusive" plane this time around, they just use "air taxi", so the company flies them on whatever routes they ordered, but in the meantime the plane goes to fly somewhere else for other clients.

It costs a ton of money for a plane to just sit around, and from what we see this tour is all about cutting costs (simple stage design, no pyro etc.).

I don't really get why people keep saying there's nothing he can do about it. I guess if you think Axl is actually the professional some seem to think he is and is actively doing vocal exercises and seeing a vocal coach, then we could say that. I really don't think that's the case though. People keep saying it's too late for that now. If it is, who's fault is that?

Thanks for sharing.

However, I was in the upper tier, and the sound was rubbish there as well (muddy, with hardly any guitars audible for the first few songs).

From what I understand it hurts him to sing that way. And I honestly don't know if it's because he didn't take good care of his voice or if it's because it's just an unnatural way to sing with rasp.

Once i heard as someone said that the way which Axl's singing- his signature voice, is killer for his voice's cords and he shouldn't sing this way.

He said there were not soundcheck, but they had soundcheck the day before. Meegans was there. And she put on Instagram. The band soundcheck the day before

Yes. I suppose the poster on reddit is talking about the day of the show. There is usually a soundcheck the day before the show and another one on show day.

Regarding whether Axl's original singing style is hurtful for the voice: I have heard quite a few professional singers comment that Axl's early styles, like 80's and 90s, were damaging to the voice. basically, he didn't sing properly.  I believe that his voice in the 00s was a reaction to that, a realization that he needed to sing differently to be able to keep doing it, and only use mask like "rasp" sparingly.

Interesting part re staff dashing to IKEA to set a bed for Axl.

There's indeed a huge IKEA store just down the road from the stadium (5 min by car) and it's open until 10pm, so this part looks believable.

I can see the stadium staff pushing trolley down the aisle: "So, what sheets should we get for Axl? Plain or stripes?" Imagine the joy of having to put together this flat pack bed on Friday night...

I find it ludicrous that someone can think Axl doesn't do vocal exercises yet has still been able to sing like he has sung. You really think you can maintain such a range without taking proper care of your voice? Besides, people say he is religious about vocal exercises. As for vocal coaching, I don't think any professional singer goes to vocal coaches all the time. You visit a coach when there is something that needs to be fixed, when there is an issue, when you need to learn something new, and then you keep using those exercises and tips that you are given in your daily life, like specific warm up and cool down exercises. You don't necessarily have to visit your vocal coach every week, similarly to most people not visiting a physical therapist every week either but get an exercise regime they can work on on their own. And we know Axl has been using vocal coaches when needed throughout his career, like when he took the AC/DC job.

As for whether it's too late. It is not too late to keep maintaining the voice at 60, I would think it is even more important than when younger. When people say it's too late it is probably in regards to fixing the voice to a level where it was 10-20-30 years ago. You can only do so much to battle ageing. Your body deteriorates as you age, at individual levels, and you can only countereffect this to some extent. But again, the fact that Axl has been able to have such a strenuous singing career these last 10 years, with so many shows at 3+ hours, with very little affect on his range and still keeping good sustain and control, is clearly evidence of him taking care of his voice. That he now may have gone too far, strained his voice too much, and suffer the effects of it, is not evidence for him not being a professional singer who takes care of his instrument, but a testament to the toll of singing like he do at his age.

Actually it doesn't fly anywhere besides locations of GNR gigs, so it must be 100% at their disposal. It spent 1 hour in Geneva 2 days ago and came back to London, then flew to Glasgow on the next day. Looks like it either dropped someone off or picked someone up from Switzerland.

Well, I imagine how bad Axl must felt that day to not be able to go to hotel room:(. Maybe they sent the plane to get a doctor- specialist from there? (pure speculation:ph34r:)

Many people don't like Axl's unmasked voice in the high register, the "mickey voice", that's fine, I don't particularly like it either. But then some people think Axl sings like that because he hasn't been taking care of his voice and hence he can't sing with rasp anymore. They listen to his vocals and they think he sings badly because they don't like the mickey all the while not acknowledging that he still displays very good control, range and sustain. They fail to see the skills and only focus on the quality of the tones which they happen to not enjoy. It's like Miles Kennedy (or whatever he's called) - awesome singer but I can't stand his voice. I believe Axl sings like that because it is the safest and most sustainable way he can reach those high notes without hurting his voice. It is actually a consequence of taking care of his voice, not the opposite.

I don't think that reddit post is believable at all.

The part about soundchecks is BS.

I find it hard to believe Axl had to sleep in away team's dressing room also.

This is a brand new stadium that was pretty expensive to build, so I'm sure it has a lot of nicely outfitted rooms/ VIP lounges with sofas, other amenities etc.

He definitely slept in the stadium- he said so on stage- and I imagine the changing rooms are the most out of the way and quiet, so it has plausibility I think.....

Reddit, so I'm inclined to cynicism.....but bits of that clearly have truth to it, so wouldn't rule it out as bullshit out of hand. Strange scenario all round.

Going to be very bad publicity wise imo, also should have been announced yesterday. Still not officially announced.

But yes I agree better than them struggling through it if Axl is unwell, hope he's feeling better soon.

Can't help but feel he pushed his voice too hard due to the sound issues in London and blew his voice.

Although RHCP cancelled Glasgow due to illness and one of them was side of stage the other night <_<

people get sick and call off, it was bound to happen eventually.  Its disappointing, but should not piss anyone off.  That is the risk you take every time you buy a ticket to any show
