My point was more like if you go see Metallica and they play Hit the lights you can't be upset that Hetfield doesn't sing like 18/19yr old anymore, you do lose some of the youthfulness with age... well besides the handful of exceptions. I think as bad as Axl can be he's almost always better than both BJ and Crue... but it's not miles better.

Hetfield can still do Hit The Lights justice though. He can sing it and still have it sound good. Who goes sees a band of dudes and expects them to sound like they did 40 years ago? You go see them play the material as they are now. Hit the lights ain’t what it was 40 years ago but it still sounds pretty good today. Some bands can pull it off and some fail. GnR are in the fail camp. They can’t pull off the material anymore unlike some of the other bands of that era and before.

There’s a video with suitably shitty audio that shows Hetfield can still deliver Hit the Lights. There’s enough footage from the recent tour showing Axl cannot deliver the material or do it justice anymore.

I think this is the first time that there was an Axl mini  rant. I miss that about him. I used to like the rants.

It could very well be that he was listening to the drums. I just noticed the facial expression. I didn't think it was weird or annoyance. I just thought he didn't look happy at that moment the camera was on him.

When was the rant?

I think he means the one after Civil War. Axl was speaking about Putin's speech day before the concert. He only commented with a couple of sentences, but you could easily find resemblance of the tone of the speech between this and the old rants. He was clearly very emotional about it.

Lols better than he has since 2006. The handlebar moustache years weren’t great

Honestly looked terrible those years and there was legit speculation about his health. He looks better at 60 in 2022 than he did in 2012 at 50.

I noticed in the Swedish show thread people also said not to take the bad reviews seriously... :shrugs:

I'll translate the one you posted in a bit.

REVIEWS: Guns N'Roses are in good condition. But they stopped developing

No start delay, no cheap gestures, no mores, it was rock and roll. The American band Guns N'Roses performed on Saturday night at the airport in Letňany, Prague, in good condition and excited. Singer W. Axl Rose traditionally struggled with intonation on stage, but he also joked with his colleagues and his technicians, who, for example, provocatively jumped in the way when they came to remove the piano from the stage after the song November Rain.

Axl looked even and happy at all. His tales among the songs were austere, the occasional use of vulgarisms was primarily a reminder of his journey and what he and his band meant for rock history, and above all was the desire to sing and the passion for the work that Guns N'Roses they have accumulated thirty-seven years of existence.

But those years were not always rosy, especially when it came to personal relationships. Axl still led the band, but guitarist Slash, another key figure, started next to him and then missed for twenty years (1996-2016). It's hard to say what the relationship is between the two today. On stage, however, they seemed close to each other, and Axl put his hand on his colleague's shoulders several times.

From the old party, the current line-up also includes bassist Duff McKagan, who has been missing for nineteen years since 1997 before returning. In Prague, he sang with the punk accent I Wanna Be Your Dog, a cover version of a song by the American band The Stooges.

Keyboardist Dizzy Reed, who has been a member of the band since 1990, had a birthday on Saturday, so after Axl's help, the audience sang the Happy Birthday To You song. The youngest member, keyboardist Melissa Reese, played and assisted in the vocal passages, and her voice fit Axl perfectly. It is a great professional and visual benefit for the group.

More than three hours

The Guns N'Roses concert lasted more than three hours. He was rock in every way, with all the pros and cons. The music of the formation is in its essence (with regard to style and lyrics) really "dirty", and such has remained in Letňany. The sound was less legible at times, rather bad at first, and the singer Axl sometimes went beyond intonation certainty, which in his case is a hallmark. At the same time, however, it should be added that at some moments he shone again, especially when he ascended to respectable voice heights or when he engaged his famous sword-like expression.

All Guns N'Roses instrumentalists are of infinite quality in their field. Guitarist Slash is then a legend and has been given space to prove it several times. The solo he played was not just a show of finger speed. His was traditional, played with contemporary driving, dynamic and non-tiring in the audience. He alternated great moments with even better ones, and when there was an instrumental duel between him and the other guitarist Richard Fortus, it was one of the highlights of the evening.

A song selection from the entire history of the band was played, which is what it has been about for every tour since 2016. She released her last album Chinese Democracy in 2008 and her audience is waiting for really new songs. Frankly, the concert repertoire would benefit from some two or three novelties. This is how the Guns N'Roses are a group that has stopped evolving.

Thirty songs were played in Prague, including Don't Cry, a hit that the band played for the second time on the ongoing tour. You're Crazy was performed in the electric version known from the album Appetite for Destruction (1987), the extra Street of Dreams was performed live for the first time since December 2012, and the program also included cover versions of AC / DC songs by Bob Dylan (Knockin ' On Heaven's Door) or Wings.

The tendency to play image projections only as an accompaniment, not as content that completes the composition, proved to be positive. True, when it rained during November Rain and the song Nightrain was accompanied by footage from the night train ride, it smelled of cheapness. But this band was mainly an orthodox rock concert, during which everything else goes aside. And she achieved that. To the satisfaction of the newcomers and obviously to ourselves.

Just watched and listened to as many YT vids I could find and this was a fabulous show. Much better than some previous shows on this tour and I thought Axl’s voice was in very good shape. The above review is decent but I believe this one deserves an 8/10. Seems they’re hitting the groove better as the tour rolls on. They should be in tip top shape for the shows at Tottenham. Wonder how the acoustics sound in that place? Anyone know?

Ok, so as someone who was there, I’d say that review is pretty fair.

I feel like with Axl’s voice getting weaker their shows are the most fun for us - die hard fans.

I say that because for me - experiencing songs like Hard School, Street Of Dreams, Reckless Life (with Axl’s classic 06 vest) or even Silkworms was something hard to believe, unforgettable and amazing. But when I looked around - there were just a few individuals that knew and seemingly enjoyed that songs.

While I’m sure casual fans had a great time too - for me it was just something else

I’m REALLY looking forward to hearing Reckless Life in Glasgow….a tune I certainly didn’t expect to hear live again.

I really do think if an album had been released already with all the promotion etc with Absurd/Hard Skool then released as singles then there might have been more reception. When the tracks were released I had to mention it to people as they had no idea - and many of the core fan base are probably of the age where ‘online presence’ isn’t that high so just don’t hear about them.

Don't think anybody can be sure as these will be the first ever major concert events held there.

Wow, surprised these are the first! Would have thought there’s been others since it opened  but I guess Covid slowed the event opportunities.

I know the place is designed for football but as a multi-event facility hopefully they included some provisions for sound. They had to know major concerts would be hosted there.

So the journalist is bitching about no new songs being played but failed to mention that they played 2 songs released less than a year ago.

Oh I wasn't bagging on Hetfield I actually think he's one of the most consistent singers in rock and he sounds even better in recent years.

I do think Axl can deliver some of the material just not all of it. But yeah I guess using Hetfield as an A B wasn't the best choice. It's just there are a small minority who hold Hetfield to his 83-92 bark and think everything after was shit, so it has its similarities

It was the first time they've played it live, I get the impression that they were in the complete focus mode to make sure they didn't mess it up (especially Duff)

Yeah prob...just i really felt for the first time wow they look uninterested. As i said im clearly over analysing 1 video. Something to have an eye on this leg though and i will ne interested at the Dublin gig im going to nxt week. Never know though...im going to enjoy it like its my last time also because by the time they do come back to Ireland could 3 yrs time and every year Axls voice gets that little bit worse. He can hit some songs here and there but largly the consistency isnt there
