Spoon87
My 7 inch vinyl arrived yesterday and I'm going to give it a spin today to groove into the weekend. Looks nice and even and the sticker was a nice little surprise. I was kinda surprised to see it having been produced here in Germanny, been shipped to the warehouse in the US and now back to Germany to me as the happy customer. 2
Free Bird
Mine arrived as well. I had to pay another 7 euros for fees and taxes. 2

Gibson87
I just got my CD in the mail today! They could have chosen a better song than DC. Crazy sounded really good though
Spoon87
I listened to the vinyl single multiple times over the weekend and as much as I like Hard skool, I absolutely can not appreciate that live version of Absurd. You can't even properly understand Axl's singing. It's basically just noise. I wonder what made them choose that live version for the B side a "comeback single". kozydogg
How is it that the production on HS sucks as much as it does? On the When the Levee Breaks they did for Playing for Change they have 50 artists playing from around the world and they can make that track sound good. Yet, with Axl's copy and paste job they make HS sound like a tin can. Why? Ugh. Edited February 26, 2022 by kozydogg

Because Axl & Caram have no idea what they're doing, apparently.

Why? Ugh. Honestly, I don't think the real problem is the cut and paste approach. Chinese Democracy had layers and layers of cut and paste from different sessions, different musicians and different producers, yet sound wise is not bad at all considering how it was produced. What makes a very big difference is the mastering, as they went for full dynamics on CD while they are using a lot of compression on HS and Absurd. From previous articles and reports, it was said that a loud, compressed mix of CD was also proposed by Bob Ludwig to Axl, but Axl liked the full dynamics version more and decided to go with it. Ludwig explained it himself in this old article here: https://web.archive.org/web/20090131045144/http://www.gatewaymastering.com/gateway_LoudnessWars.asp Quote The trial disc I submitted to the producers had 3 versions: The one I personally liked had no compression that was used just for loudness, only compression that was needed for great sounding rock and roll. Then, knowing how competitive everything is these days, I made two more masterings, one with more compression and another with yet more compression, but even the loudest one wasn’t remotely as loud as some recent CDs. Hoping that at least one of these would satisfy Axl and Caram Costanzo, the co-producers of the record, I was floored when I heard they decided to go with my full dynamics version and the loudness-for-loudness-sake versions be damned. I think the fan and press backlash against the recent heavily compressed recordings finally set the context for someone to take a stand and return to putting music and dynamics above sheer level. Regarding why HS and Absurd sound quite bad, Ludwig himself seems to offer a possible explanation in hindsight through that same article: Quote when I first heard some of final mixes which were incredibly multi-layered and dense, I was surprised by two things: The mixes were so finally honed that doing the smallest move sounded like I had done a lot and also that adding the typical amount of compression used in mastering these days took the life and musicality out of the recordings in a big way. Looks like the compression used for HS and Absurd triggered exactly what Ludwig described here. I can't help but wonder what spurred Axl to change his mind about this and go for such a u-turn. MaskingApathy
Absurd actually sounds pretty good, HS would sound better if they hadn't done those programmed drums. Otherwise it's not a bad mix but I do think if they got a real engineer to do it then it would sound awesome (see SOYL mixed by CLA).
Macho Vidal
Does anyone know when and where the live performances (Don't Cry and You're Crazy) on the Hard Skool CD took place? Also, whether any studio dubs were added? There is a GNR Live Era thread that listed every performance and studio tweak for each song. Any GNR sleuthers still around? I know you didn't say that, I'm just trying to make a point here haha. I think HS suffered with the drums sound and Axl's reverb. It does sound too compressed overall, it's quite visible on the soundwaves, but this wouldn't be a problem if Axl and Brain sounded better, IMO. Slash and Richard's guitars sounded punchy and in-your-face with the compression, for the best, IMO. 21 hours ago, Macho Vidal said: Does anyone know when and where the live performances (Don't Cry and You're Crazy) on the Hard Skool CD took place? The Live Era was easier to pinpoint the performances. This new one would be too hard because nobody wants to listen to the NITL performances again.

Definitely 2021 tour I think, not sure which show. I don't think they did any studio work to it, at least I don't hear anything obvious. RichardNixon
"Hard Skool" doesn't sound "cut and paste" to me. It makes no difference what was recorded when. "Absurd" does sound like a mish-mash, but is still cool, imho. The odd break in "Absurd" is probably my favorite part. Love the contrast.
